Why India’s Narendra Modi may not eat at the White House dinner - The Washington Post

04405458-4415.jpg

Ronald Reagan famously said once: “All great change in America begins at the dinner table.”

What if the dinner plate of the guest of honor is empty?

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting the United States later this week, his first trip to this country after his party won a resounding victory in May. It is a visit that has been a long time coming and one that both nations hope will reboot U.S.-India relations.

Modi, who will address the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Saturday and speak before a large gathering at Madison Square Garden, was expected to attend a private White House dinner Monday.

But there is a new twist in the tale.

Modi, a devout Hindu, is observing the annual nine-day religious fast called Navratri, an auspicious period in the Hindu calendar that also marks the coming of autumn. No, this is not about dietary restrictions. For Modi, this is a strict no-food fast.

Fasting Hindus follow a fruit-only fast, or avoid meat, or get by with only one meal a day during this nine-day period. Some avoid onion, garlic and alcohol, as well. But Modi, who is a devotee of Hindu mother goddess Durga and a strict vegetarian and teetotaller, follows the strictest form of abstinence. Since the 1970s, he has observed water-only fasts.

In a blog in 2012, Modi wrote:

Yes, I have been fasting during Navratri for over 35 years now. This fast is never to seek anything but an act of self-purification. Fasts such as this have been a source of strength, power and inspiration for me over the last many years.

“For Modi, this is not a religious ritual; it is a spiritual tool for introspection and cleansing,” said Nilanjan Mukhopadhyay, author of the book "Narendra Modi: The Man, The Times." “For him, the fast is a personal journey inward. But knowing Modi, he will also convert it into an opportunity to tell Americans how strong he is from the inside.”

Is this a dietary or diplomatic challenge for the White House? The White House staff has organized kosher meals and has catered to accommodate the dietary preferences of other world leaders before.

“Every detail of a state visit is addressed weeks in advance of a head of state’s arrival by the U.S. State Department’s Office of Protocol in collaboration with the advance team of the visiting country," said William Bushong, chief historian of the White House Historical Association. "This would include any dietary requirements.”

“I can say that it never happened in the 11 years that I was there,” said Walter Scheib, former White House chef. “I will also say that the White House staff and the first families will go out of their way to provide a gracious and hospitable visit to all guests. I’m certain that the prime minister will be cared for and all of his needs will be satisfied.”

By refusing to eat in the US white house NaMo has once again used his native intelligence to subtly insult the US

One of the comments on this article tells its best,

"It is a very true hospitality dilema. A Coin always have two sides, so do each situation. i do not have much knowledge about whole situation but would like add my 2 cents. In India it is a saying that " You don,t trust, you don,t eat together". To me it is clearly not the matter of just simple food.. but it is a matter of mutual trust. Since Mr. Modi is the Prime Minister of India, i think by not eating in America, he would like to show the other side of the Coin... which means India do not trust any more the America.

Since this kind of political meeting just did not get scheduled randomly... so for me it is very hard to believe that both Indian and American side totally miss these 9 days in Mr Modi calendar."

And you would be WRONG. :D

In the past, NaMo had ALWAYS AVOIDED travelling during this period, especially to avoid insulting the host by his abstinence. This time he specifically timed his visit to coincide with the Navratri Fast .

PM Modi to observe strict fast during US trip, to only consume lemonade, tea

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will observe a strict religious fast during his maiden trip to the United States, aides said on Monday, in a test both of the 64-year-old leader's stamina and of protocol in the Obama White House. Throughout a gruelling schedule that features the United Nations General Assembly, a rally of Indian Americans at New York's Madison Square Garden and talks with Obama in Washington, Modi will abstain from food. In keeping with the habits of a lifetime, Modi will restrict himself to a "liquid diet" throughout the Navratri festival, when Hindus worship goddess Durga in all her manifestations. "He will only consume lemonade with some honey and a cup of tea every day," a senior official in Modi's office in New Delhi said. "He has been fasting for the last four decades and does not want to change this pattern even while he is travelling," added the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Navratri, derived from the ancient Sanskrit words 'nine nights', falls this year from September 25 to October 3. The festival spans Modi's first trip to the United States since he triumphed in a general election in May. It culminates on the tenth day, known as Dussehra, which marks the victory of good over evil. Millions of Hindus fast, pray and dance to please the mother goddess during Navratri. Some restrict their diet to fruit and vegetables while spurning meat, onions and garlic. Others, like Modi, a strict vegetarian, do not eat at all. "He wakes up at 4 AM, meditates, prays and carries his own bottle of lemonade with him," :D said another government official who has worked closely with Modi for 12 years. "Doctors had suggested that he should consume fruits and more juices but he has refused to make any dietary additions during the Navratri celebrations," said a senior minister in Gujarat, where Modi served as chief minister for more than a decade. "In the US you will not see him having dinner or lunch with Obama," said the state minister, who is also close to Modi. Another Indian government source said the White House had been informed of Modi's dietary requirements.

The US embassy in New Delhi declined to comment. (LOL) US officials have indicated that President Barack Obama would not treat Modi to a state dinner, as Modi did not hold the rank of head of state. Obama did, however, accord this honour to Modi's predecessor, Manmohan Singh. As a young man, Modi left home to seek enlightenment, finding inspiration from the writings of philosopher-monk Swami Vivekananda, who propagated the Hindu faith at the Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893. Modi's Hindu nationalist credo came under close scrutiny over sectarian rioting in his home state of Gujarat in 2002 in which more than 1,000 people, most of them Muslims, were killed. Modi has denied wrongdoing and was exonerated in a Supreme Court investigation. In 2011, Modi fasted for three days to promote religious harmony in Gujarat, involving several Muslim religious leaders in the event to gain their political support.

NaMo by all indications will not even take a sip of US water during his US visit  .......... like all Indian PM, he will be carrying his own water to the US, not to mention Indian suger and tea leaves :D

US prepares to welcome Modi as PM's visit sparks a diplomatic stir | Daily Mail Online

On September 25 Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be heading for New York. There is a lot of expectation on both sides.
Many are saying that Modi’s whirlwind diplomacy - with India’s neighbours, including China, and Japan - has earned him the distinction of being a turbo-charged leader among his global counterparts. And now, Prime Minister Modi is all set to sit down with US President Barack Obama.
Not surprisingly, the prime minister’s impending visit has become a talking point here.

US-prepares-welcome-Modi-PM-s-visit-sparks-diplomatic-stir.html

Growing impact

After his successful visit to Japan, which saw the personal warmth between Prime Minister Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the Indian prime minister charmed Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbot. It was followed by the recent high-profile meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping in New Delhi.
Soon, the leaders of the UK and Russian President Vladimir Putin will be heading to Delhi, proving the growing importance of engaging with India under Prime Minister Modi. And then leaders from Africa too will join the queue to be part of ‘Modiplomacy’.

Modi’s slated meeting with President Barack Obama, and the dinner in honour of the visiting Indian prime minister, have created a lot of buzz in the diplomatic circles in New York.

The two leaders will interact on September 29 and 30, and it will be watched keenly by global leaders who will assemble to address the United Nations General Assembly.

In the US, Modi is slated for a performance at the Madison Square Garden to woo Indian-Americans. He will also deliver a speech in Central Park, and meet the captains of American industries.

Who will say now that for a decade the same Narendra Modi was not granted a visa by the US? The Americans are now all out to extend a red carpet welcome to the Indian prime minister.

“Narendra Modi’s foreign policy is driven by security matters when it comes to immediate neighbours, and economic factors when dealing with major powers, as evidenced by the joint statements with the world leaders. For his visit to the US, there is less that the US government can offer in terms of infrastructure development and manufacturing, at least not in the scale of Japan or China. But Prime Minister Modi’s engagements with the American private sector will be crucial for the US. It will be important for India’s development initiatives in the near future,” Richard M. Rossow, Wadhwani Chair in US-India Policy Studies at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, told Mail Today.

Bolstering ties

While in the US, Modi will engage with many world leaders and hold bilateral meetings. He will meet Bangladeshi Prime Minister Seikh Hasina; Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakshe; the Clintons - former US president Bill Clinton and former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton; the mayor of New York, and many more. All of it will certainly add up to the wholesome efforts of both the Americans and the Indians to bolster Indo-US ties.

Narendra Modi will be the first Indian prime minister in over a decade to stay at the US President’s guest house - the 190-year-old Blair House - when he travels to Washington on September 29.

Former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the last one to stay at the guest house. Built as a private home in 1824, Blair House has played an important role in American political, diplomatic and cultural history from Andrew Jackson’s ‘Kitchen Cabinet’, to private chats with Abraham Lincoln, to Harry S. Truman’s crucial leadership as World War II ended and the Cold War began.

Former PM Manmohan Singh never stayed in the Blair House and always preferred a hotel during his US visits. -PTI

Obama, Biden will host dinner/lunch, but NaMo will eat nothing - Rediff.com India News

As expected, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's schedule in New York and Washington, DC is tight.

President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama will host a private dinner for Modi on Monday, September 29, at the White House. All eyes will be on the body language of the two leaders and how Modi rises above the bitter past where he was denied a US visa by the State Department.

According to sources in the Prime Minister's Office, Modi will not eat dinner as he will be fasting. He will have only nimbu-paani (lime juice), at the most. For the last 40 years, Modi fasts during Navratras devoted to Ma Amba. He drinks lukewarm water and sometime he eats a fruit a day.

He will have a working lunch on Tuesday, September 30, with Vice-President Joe Biden and Secretary of State John Kerry at the State Department. Again, he will eat nothing. :D

Modi will leave India on Friday, September 26. Only reporters and crew of the government-run All India Radio, Doordarshan, Press Information Bureau and a couple of news agencies will travel with the prime minister on Air India One.

Some 50 journalists from the print, online and television media will travel separately from India to cover the visit.

Modi, like then prime minister Manmohan Singh, will stay at the New York Palace Hotel in Manhattan.

Saturday, September 27: His first public engagement will be a visit to Ground Zero, marking the 9/11 terror attacks. He will also visit the 9/11 Memorial Museum built to honour the victims of the 2001 terror attacks.

From here, Modi will travel to the United Nations to deliver his speech to the UN General Assembly, which is scheduled for 10.30 local time. All the prime minister's engagements will be telecast live on Doordarshan.

After his UN speech, Modi will meet with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse and Bangadesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. A meeting with Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has not yet been fixed, but Modi does have the time to squeeze in a meeting with his Pakistani counterpart.

On Saturday afternoon, he will meet Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo will also call on the Indian leader.

At 6 pm, Modi has accepted an invitation to attend the Global Citizen festival at Central Park. It will be a security nightmare for his security personnel, but an interesting event where Modi will give a short speech on poverty.

The prime minister has set aside time on Saturday evening for private meetings with non resident Indians. Many of these NRIs helped Modi win huge support these last 12 years and there is a huge demand to meet him amongst those who have worked relentlessly on his behalf.

Sunday, September 28: Around 11.30 am, Modi will address the Indian-American community at the famed Madison Square Garden. The prime minister will
be in his element as his fans will dominate the audience.

On Sunday evening, Indian Ambassador Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar will host a dinner at The Taj-owned Pierre hotel where the who's who of the Indian-American community will get a glimpse of Modi. Again, the list of guests has been strictly approved by the PMO in New Delhi.

Monday, September 29: Modi will meet with some of America's top business leaders in the morning. He will also meet former President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton. Modi has been invited to the prestigious Council of Foreign Relations where he will deliver a lecture to an invitee-only audience.

The prime minister will fly to Washington, DC on Monday afternoon. He will stay at Blair House where State guests usually reside when they visit the American capital. A couple of hours after his arrival, Modi will arrive at the White House for Barack and Michelle Obama's dinner.

Tuesday, September 30: Modi will offer tribute to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi opposite the Indian embassy in Washington, DC and visit the Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King memorials on Tuesday morning.

He will then meet President Obama and his team for the summit after which he will travel to the State Department for lunch with Biden, Kerry and other officials.

After lunch, Modi will travel to Capitol Hill to meet House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner. In Washington, DC, he will also meet businessmen at an event hosted by the US-India Business Council.

On Tuesday evening, at around 7 pm, Modi will depart for India.

Navratri is from Sept 25 to Oct 3, Timing is Everything

really, we are really discussing if he is going to eat or not?

are you serious.

this is getting kinda ridiculous.

Of course. It is as significant as the Visa denial by the US. How many times was that discussed ?

Anybody who understands Indian culture knows what that slight signifies. Are you going to pretend that it does not mean anything ?

that whole visa issue was pointless. Modi was included in a list that only included himself. No other dictator got a look in. It was an excercise of U.S. to prove that they care about other religions too.

In the end it is about the money. And India is a promising market.

US used Modi to get some brownie points and show the world that they care about other religion too.

Modi is returning the favour to the US by showing how little he really cares about the US. The same US which was forced to issue Visa to Modi and give him a state reception. :P

The Visa issue was not pointless since it generated a TON of articles and opinions in India. It also generated international infamy for Modi, Gujarat and India.

BTW what did you mean by "no other dictator got a look in" ? are you implying that Modi was a dictator ?

Modi was alleged to have been involved or not done enough in the riots. Those are the allegations.

During that time period, many other personalities engaged in repression of their own. My point was it was to score brownie points in terms of Human rights.

I know that you think me a western stooge. But U.S. is pretty important to India and in the future in terms of trade it should be more important.

India gets around $80-90 billion in IT sector. a large chunk of the business comes from the U.S. and there are certainly well accomplished Indian americans who can be beneficial in the future.

I actually like Modi's foreign policy. he is using diplomacy to increase trade. A lot of western nations hold a lot of Money like Germany where we should attempt, at least attempt to get some of those money coming to India in terms of investment.

But not in a way that compromises some of our key concerns.

Visa denial may have been used by US administration to appease Islamist ( in didn't turned out so well in retrospect ), but India would be stupid if it " does not care " about US. With China threatning to invade you ( though they threaten everyone ), your relationship with US is of extreme important to you, also.

US is important to India, which is why Modi is going to the US in the first place in-spite of being insulted by the US govt. He does so purely for India's benefit.

That does not mean he should he should sacrifice his personal self respect and dignity while interacting with the US. It was necessary that he paid them back in the same coin without fear. The world respects courage.

What I like about this incident is that it shows quite a few things about Modi. That he does not forget or forgive, however mighty the opponent is. That shows his self confidence and courage.

A person who is capable of Avenging his own insult is also a man who knows the value of Self Respect and dignity. He is a man who will Protect the self Respect and Dignity of India in the international arena.

Unlike Manmohan who was humiliated by congress and Rahul gandhi while he was in the US. His own lack of self respect ended up showing India in poor light in the world community. He made India into a laughing stock due to his own weakness.

That is why the US could arrest and strip search and Indian diplomat with impunity and deny visa to an elected Chief Minister of India while India made no protest.

Modi's revenge tells me that today a True Lion sits on India's SINGhSAN and no a circus ka Singh called MMS. And that helps me sleep a lot better.

Finally, US is a greedy entity and such slight matter little to their corporates. They will continue to do business with India as long as they can make money.

US foreign policy and defence policy is also not dependent on the personal relationship between obama and Modi. It is independent and will follow its own trajectory based on Geo-political realities.

Modi not caring much for the US does not translate as India not caring much for the US.

It only means US will have to try extra hard to convince India to trust it and work with the US. Meanwhile India will continue to seek all other alternatives to secure its interests.

China is no more likely to invade India than the US is  If anything China will fist invade Taiwan where it has some chance of a victory.
