Meghadootam by kalidasa talks about a Yaksha.

Now we have authentic proof that yaksha exist and that he used to carry messages for people :D

They are not "tolerated" man. They are feared. People keepout of their way. And they have held right of first passage at the Kumbh since centuries.

Read the book "I, Aghora" by a famous doctor who lived among them for years.

Nah, rural folks may fear them, but the city folks, deracinated Indians, hold them in contempt. Same applies for Kumbh too. I saw a lot of videos on them, they are really pretty harmless bunch of people.

I read quite a few references from those book and doctor in various areas. They have a distinct way of life and is accepted by the society.

You still do not get it. There is no tolerance or aceptance involved. These guys are the big daddies of the black arts. Who is going to come in their way? They keep away from society to protect society. Because the same society looks to them when the shit hits the fan.

the basic dharma and adharma can be easily identified and for this reason you have brain. Dharma does not mean religion, dharma means righteous!! Bhakti means religion/divine etc.

Dharma to help the needy, to save the weak, not to lie, not to theft, not to molest, not to kill unless it's about your life., etc.. what is there you do not understand about righteous/dharma?

that's why we say, when you are aware that it is right but some law does not allow you... ''dharm sankat mein daal rahey ho.''

It varies society to society. In etopia, it is okay to abduct a woman and marry her. Not in this part of the world. It was good to perform Sati two centuries back but not now. There is no dearth of brain, but wisdom.

Even if you write about yakshas now, not a problem. can you do it about any very sensitive say cow eating now? you will be attacked in no time.

Which work of Kalidasa talks about eating beef ? Be specific.

Do the 'state' fear them? it is accepted by the people and the state only.

We've grown up in different circles then.

There was a thread here some time ago, where a couple of Sikh Amritdharis were beating up a poor naga in Punjab. You should have read that thread. Almost all PDF Indians were cheering the Sikhs for beating up that poor man.

Sati was not a normal cultural practice. It was a response to Muslim invasion. Once Muslim invasion stopped, there was no need to continue Sati.

I am speaking about the Aghoris here. Not the Naga babas. Let's just say in my personal life I have a lot of time for the black arts. I do not laugh, I do not scoff. There is a lot we know less than shit about. And shit happens. Is made to happen. Every day in the real world. And when such happens, there is often some strong shit needed to protect yourself and family.

Sati was an abnormal practice, but its origins are quite literally with "Sati' the first wife of Shiva and daughter of Daksha Prajapati. It was certainly not a common practice, but it was not unknown either.

Sati is held in high esteem because she killed herself to protest against her Husband being insulted by her father. It is one of the essence of Hindu culture.

Yup, it was rare emotional response and not a culture. That is what I was trying to say.

Our cultural learnings come from that story too.

The wife being more concerned about her Husbands honour and the need for the father of the bride to honour the husband. These were some of the few morals taken away from the story of Sati.

The need to avoid confrontation between FIL and husband. How the women becomes the victim in such a circumstance etc.

That was not the point I was making. The Aghoris could well be endowed with powers beyond our comprehension, but we have a section of population which scoffs at everything supernatural and everything Hindu, and others are just god fearing normal folks who would respect just about any yogi or baba.

I for one do believe that tantrics and other yogis can call on to a lot of powers unknown to us.

No disagreement there, but practice of Sati itself never became "culture" so to speak.

Also makes me wonder in my skeptical moments, if these guys really had so much power as we believe, how did they allow so much evil to happen in India?
