Why is South Korea so obsessed with Japan?

LOOL NOT really since korea is still far more advanced than even China in many fields, much less India(who is the powerhouse in S.Asia).



Nope, Korea pop music is still the most popular in Asia. In fact the only Asian country whose music has had a wide ranging effect/influence over the west/world is Korean. Their pop music is indeed the most popular in Asia by far. Japan shouldn't take this one from Korea.
Japan's anime still reign supreme in Asia and even the world though.

Korean pop music rules Japan? LOL! Majority of Japanese would be insulted if you tried comparing their music to ours, Mike. I admit that I listen to "some" Korean techno hits, but to say that average Japanese folks like myself go 'ga ga' for Korean music is preposterous.

Yes, they do, its ridiculous. Ever been to a Korean national forum ? Or been to a Korean university setting? I had the pleasure of doing an exchange program in Inchon for 6 months during my under grad years, Koreans , to me, are very very nationalistic. And they don't hide their low opinion of Japanese or Chinese folks.

Their society is way more xenophobic. Japan, definitely, is way way way more accepting compared to their society.

Small nations surrounded by giants do have this tendency but Koreans seem to exceed at this

Agree, the Chinese have indeed been the biggest obstacle /impediment for Vietnam creating a united sub Mekong south East Asian empire under Vietnam. Without China Vietnam will be ruling the sub Mekong region with Thailand included long ago.

I’m sorry to say this but they are right. Let’s put it this way, do people in China watch Vietnamese movie? No. However, there are ALWAYS Chinese dramas playing on Viet TV. I sometime complain to the TV station about this. Also, Vietnamese still keep practicing Chinese culture like eating with chopstick, celebrating Chinese new year, keeping Chinese surname, etc.

I think I am the only pure Vietnamese member here. I only eat with chopstick when in Asian resturants or at Asian friends house. I don’t celebrate Chinese new year (tet), if my little niece and nephew come asking me for some red evelopes, I just tell them to **** off I ain’t Chinese. When I get marry, I’m planning to change my surname together with my wife, we’ll create out own surname.

But to the rest of you Vietnamese who can’t do what I do, then I’d say yes, you are obsess with China and still a Chinese wannabe. Nothing wrong with that but you have to admit it.

Well Vietnam China relationship is like S.Korea-japan love-hate relationship. Even though both Vietnam and S.Korea hate China and Japan respectively as they were both colonized and ruled by each, yet they still borrow/learn/admire/copied a lot from China and Japan. So its an interesting type of relationship.

South Korea only borrowed from Japan because it was brutally conquered in the 20th century and then ran by Japanese collaborators afterwards. The reason they are so anti-Japan is because the South Korean regime has questionable legitimacy compared to North Korea both internationally and domestically, which makes them VERY uncomfortable.

North Korea was founded by Kim Il Sung, who despite all his faults, did fight against Japan (recorded by neutral Soviet and Chinese historians). South Korea on the other hand was (as recorded by neutral American historians) controlled by Japanese collaborators. Park Chung Hee, the father of the current President of South Korea and former President himself, was a Japanese general named Takagi Masao. Because of the question of regime legitimacy, and because South Korea used to be a military dictatorship, they had to try extra hard to play up how little relation they have with Japan.

Park Chung Hee, the father of the current President of South Korea and former President himself, was a Japanese general named Takagi Masao. Because of the question of regime legitimacy, and because South Korea used to be a military dictatorship, they had to try extra hard to play up how little relation they have with Japan.

Park Chung-hee actually had 2 Japanese names. His first one was Takagi Masao, but later changed it to Okamoto Minoru , and that was his name when he served in the Imperial Japanese Army. Second, he was not a 'general', but was a 1st Lieutenant , and was an aide de camp to the regimental commanders of the Imperial Japanese Army where he was stationed. Park, indeed, was a proud Japanese servant, he even wrote a letter to the Governor of Chosen (Korea) in a letter that was written in his own blood how he wanted to attend university training in Japan , and expressed his blind loyalty to Japan that he would practice self - annihilation for Japanese Empire if he had to.

BTW, Not alot of people know this but Park Chung hee (or also known as Okamoto Minoru), when he was stationed in Manchukoku (Manchuria), he collaborated extensively with Kempeitai (Japanese Secret Police). Hard core, indeed.
