Why is South Indian food different from North Indian food?

Paratha is different from Parotta..though the Parotta is derived from Paratha.
Andhrites don't eat Parotta, they eat Paratha.:)

its the same thing u are calling parotta......its just the distorted form of laccha paratha...
andharaites do eat ur parotta....i have seen and eaten in many small and big hotels motels and restaurants ....

the paratha u showed is stuffed one but there are many non stuffed paratha....

ab U are teaching a north indian abt paratha......:angry:

Food habits depends on various reasons . .

1) regional or easy availability of the ingredients

2) religious believes of the people living in that area

3) Climate conditions as it affects the availability of the ingredients directly,

4) Culture

5) geographical location

this is applicable for every region/state/country

Parotta is nothing but lachha partha's refined form.
My theory is somebody from north once made lachhaa paratha for his south Indian friend. South Indian friend who wanted to emulate his north Indian fren ended making paratha with white flour and called it parotttttaaa. :D

Yeah, but isn't it a bit weird to see Parotta stalls in almost every city and town of Kerala? I'd understand it if it were big only in the major cities, but just about every town has them.:unsure:

curd is used but nt much ...I eat it fresh with chini....and roti sometime....(curd + sugar...with roti...)
tamarind not much in use except when u make chutney or paani puri paani.....
aur to curd is used in making curry ...but i don't like that much.....
thats all..
but in south they do put tamarind or curd or mango in many foods....right...../:unsure:

You dnt eat kaddi?? Thats also made using curd. :)

Kaise din aa gaye yaar, ek South Indian North Indian ko Paratha ke potu dikha kar explain kar raha hai.:lol:

Jaise maine kaha, it's a recent entrant into the major cities of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. But it's ubiquitous in Kerala. You cannot escape it even if you want to there. Fish and Parotta are that common there.:)

I don't like kaddi .....par jab mommy bana deti hai to mujhe khana padta hai....:cry::cry:...fir bolne pe hi dal banati hai mommy....

what spice u like most....I would say cardamom....its best .....

south india also uses lot of spices ...if I have to say then south india uses more spices then norther counter part....
after all kerala is spice bowl of india......:p:
we use a lot of oil and every thing is fried,....where as south uses many thing raw.....and I like that.....raw is good...:-)
south uses a lot of coco nut.....I have got one question why south uses lot of sour in food or its just mine ignorance......:undecided:

I got to agree with you that we use less spices than South Indian food and majority our food requires the use of oil a lot, also ghee and yoghurt. And are also fried like shobji, aloo or dim (egg) bhajji or meat and tikka based food. And many others!!

My parottaa theory says it all began in northern malabar.Kerala is a small but populated state and it doesn't take long for tasty recipes to spread. :P
