What's new

Why is India called a vegetarian country when two-thirds of Indians eat meat?

kindly provide me evidence to support your statements . conversion or following a religion only changes lifestyle of a human being . every human being is same in the eyes of mother nature .

This one was laughable. What's more laughable is violence compared with non violence. Anyway it's scrolls view and we all know that atheist view of left.

Indians have started consuming meat only recently and that too it's mostly once in a week to once in a fortnight. Which means meat is not a dominant component in their food unlike other countries.

If you look at consumption of meat in India then many people are fish eaters or chicken than anything else.
Bread Omellete is common breakfast food in Indian railways and other common restaurants. If you get out you find Biriyani stores all around India. Chicken Biriyani is the eaten by Indian Hindu youth all the time. Mc Donalds and KFC have non-veg ads on TV, people prefer non-veg.
70% of Hindu children don't eat food without non-veg on plate, they hate vegetables. You have force children to eat vegetables.

Chicken, mutton and eggs is common food in Indian army langar, Officer's mess routinely have Chicken or mutton as a dish. Dry meat, Chicken and eggs is part of Indian army ration. It is meat eating aggressive soldiers which defeated Pakistan. Have you seen a vegetarian regiment in Indian army ?

When I was a young child I was very weak and thin, my mother gave me lots of mutton to eat to make better. I think all parents have right to feed their children whatever they want.

India being a Vegetarian country is a "Trap" that is sold in certain countries to claim that Hindus are weak... you know what I mean.... LOL
There is Rajput regiment, Jaat regiment, Mahar regiment etc all are meat eating regiments. There is no Vegetarian regiment,

Indians are hypocrite to the nth degree, they will only eat veggie food when in company of other Indians but when alone they will enjoy meat

I guess calling a 120 km/hr Indian as a fast bowler is a trap too

Infact if you look at Pakistani talk shows... there are anchors calming... it was Muslims that brought Meat-eating into India... YOU should look at their faces when they say so..... LOL

This may happen mostly in states like Gujarat and Maharashtra, particularly in Gujarat where meat eating is relatively way lower than any other Indian state. Most restaurants don't even have a non-veg menu.

I belong to a South Indian state and never have I ever eaten veg when I went out with my friends and there is no such thing as Gau Rakshaks in most states of India. I started eating veg on a higher scale only after coming to the US as food is relatively way expensive and I mostly prefer cooking some simple recipes all by myself even though raw chicken is cheaper than veggies in the US

All dry North western states like Gujarat, Rajasthan are non-veg, how do they sustain themselves ? Their arid weather is not suitable for much farming, only alternative is cattle. If they don't eat their non-milch cattle they are wasting resources. Why Indian even exports beef, Indian Hindu children should eat this and get strong. Good protein will increase their brain and body.

I thought food is cheap in USA? are you a student?

I recently graduated and started working. Yes, junk and fast-food is cheap. I ate a couple of days in McD and I put on a lotta pounds. The notion in US is, if you're fat - you're poor because most low income people resort to eating cheap fast-food and grow really fat

India doesn't export a lot of beef but it is buffalo meat which it exports a lot. I personally eat beef but most religious Hindus don't need to go against their beliefs and eat beef, eating lamb can equally substitute to that protein.

They maybe sustaining on meat a while ago but recent years have shown that they eat veg predominantly. You can have a look at this map which shows Gujarat and Rajasthan are the highest veg eating states

do you cook?
even if you are a graduate and just started on job ladder it should still be affordable, meat is still a lot cheaper(at least in UK).. compared to India... so is milk...

I used to eat out when I started my job but I mostly cook now. Yeah, chicken is relatively cheaper than veggies, so I cook chicken most of the time and shrimp occasionally but if it comes to eating beef, lamb, pork or fish I always eat out.

this is no evidence , this is just a practice or tradition coming into existence as a result of a human being living under the influence of fear and illiteracy . evidence means documentary evidence .

There are about 700 crore humans living on this planet, more than 650 crore are non-vegetarians. From Roman Emperers to Nobel laureates majority are non-vegetarians.
Religion in Indian subcontinent predates Brahmanism. Most of the Hindus in coastal areas or Riverine areas eat Fishes, Hunters and Herders eat meat. Even Kings eat meat. The Rajputs used to slaughter cows as a form of worship, it was only stopped recently.

Some ancient texts inform that the Brahmin sages (rishis) who lived in forest hermitages (asramas) entertained their guests (atithis, or people who came without prior notice, without looking for the proper tithi) by killing calves and offering beef, considered to be a delicious item of food reserved for honoured guests. That is how the term atithi acquired the synonym of goghna, killer of cows (see Ancient India by R S Sharma). Animal slaughter for sacrifice was common during the Vedic age. The sacrificial animal was called pasu, a term that is used to denote the cow in Kerala. In the ancient law books like Manusmriti, the Kshatriyas were permitted to kill animals in hunting and consume their meat. In Valmiki's Ramayana there is a reference to Sita, wife of Rama, the Kshatriya prince of Ayodhya, keeping watch (during their time of exile in the forest) over the meat of animals drying in the sun

Many of the Brahmin pundits of Kashmir are meat eaters, and the Brahmins of Bengal have a great liking for fish which they call Ganga pushpa. They cook the head of the fish too, and serve it as the most important item for the chief guest in the house.

Manusmriti (Chapter 5 / Verse 30) says, “It is not sinful to eat meat of eatable animals, for Brahma has created both the eaters and the eatables.”

Manusmriti (5 / 35) states: When a man who is properly engaged in a ritual does not eat meat, after his death he will become a sacrificial animal during twenty-one rebirths.

Maharishi Yagyavalkya says in Shatpath Brahmin (3/1/2/21) that, “I eat beef because it is very soft and delicious.”
Apastamb Grihsutram (1/3/10) says, “The cow should be slaughtered on the arrival of a guest, on the occasion of ‘Shraddha’ of ancestors and on the occasion of a marriage.”
Rigveda (10/85/13) declares, “On the occasion of a girl’s marriage oxen and cows are slaughtered.”
Rigveda (6/17/1) states that “Indra used to eat the meat of cow, calf, horse and buffalo.”
Vashistha Dharmasutra (11/34) writes, “If a Brahmin refuses to eat the meat offered to him on the occasion of ‘Shraddha’ or worship, he goes to hell.”

.”
you are quoting adulterated and controversial translations of the scripts . there are many samskript intellectuals who have rightly translated the text , Manu Smriti by Dr Surendra Kumar , you can refer to that book . and if you still believe such adulterated texts , then there is no point of debate .
