Why is Europe considered a continent?

Europe, in particular Ancient Greece, is the birthplace of Western culture. It played a predominant role in global affairs from the 15th century onwards, especially after the beginning of colonialism. Between the 16th and 20th centuries, European nations controlled at various times the Americas, most of Africa, Oceania, and large portions of Asia. Both World Wars were largely focused upon Europe, greatly contributing to a decline in Western European dominance in world affairs by the mid-20th century as the United States and Soviet Union took prominence. During the Cold War, Europe was divided along the Iron Curtain between NATO in the west and the Warsaw Pact in the east. European integration led to the formation of the Councilof Europe and the European Union in Western Europe

Ancient Greece had a profound impact on Western civilization. Western democratic and individualistic culture are often attributed to Ancient Greece. The Greeks invented the polis, or city-state, which played a fundamental role in their concept of identity. These Greek political ideals were rediscovered in the late 18th century by European philosophers and idealists. Greece also generated many cultural contributions: in philosophy, humanism and rationalism under Aristotle, Socrates and Plato; in history with Herodotus and Thucydides; in dramatic and narrative verse, starting with the epic poems of Homer; and in science with Pythagoras, Euclid and Archimedes.

The culture of Europe can be described as a series of overlapping cultures; cultural mixes exist across the continent. There are cultural innovations and movements, sometimes at odds with each other. Thus the question of "common culture" or "common values" is complex.

The foundation of European culture was laid by the Greeks, strengthened by the Romans, stabilised by Christianity, reformed by the 15th-century Renaissance and Reformation, modernised by the 18th century Age of Enlightenment and globalised by successive European empires between the 16th and 20th centuries.

According to historian Hilaire Belloc, for several centuries the peoples of Europe based their self-identification on the remaining traces of the Roman culture and on concept of Christendom, because many european-wide military alliances were of religious nature: the Crusades (1095-1291), the Reconquista (711-1492), the Battle of Lepanto (1571).

Long story short, Europeans are not Asians. Huge cultural differences that date back thousands of years, and wars, are the reasons that Europe is its own continent.

The Scythians in the graph are actually some scythianized Siberians, not the true Aryan Scythians though.

The Europeans or what they like to call themselves; "white" people will not be happy with this reality check.

I think geographically Europe and Asia belong to the same continent, hence it is Eurasia.

But culturally and racially Europe is pretty much isolated from most part of Asia, thus it can be named as an unique continent of its own. :coffee:

Arabia, India and China are all culturally and politically difference, but why are they still lumped into one continent while "Europe" get their own continent? "Europe" is simply a region of Asia; Northwestern Asia, as India is another region of Asia; Southwestern Asia.

I think some part of Europe does overlap with some part of Asia in the genetic relationship at least.

For example, the South Europeans are genetically very closely related to the Middle Easterners, even though they are European Christians, but they do share more genetic affinity to the Middle Easterners than to the North Europeans.

Lol at this thread.

Sonny boy...we got 2 world wars behind us, so we can call ourselves whatever we want.

Has a little to do with plate tectonics

Plus, we invented the idea of "continents". Have an original idea? You get to define it.

If they insist on being different from Asia we can call their part North Africa (while Africa to be renamed South Africa).

(and obviously a powerful idea, as those far removed from our culture are disscussing it)

proper term for the total landmass is 'Eurasia'. If you'd rather Europe be considered NorthWest Eurasia and China considered South East Eurasia that is your choice.

In fact it could also all be simply 'europe'. China will be south east Europe, Europe is europe proper.

What a pointless debate. Does it really matter? I mean even Africa is connected by land to Asia. Why not Africa be part of the Asia as well:cheesy:

Since "Asia" is an umbrella term for China, India, Arabia combined etc, it should not exclude "Europe". The proper term should in fact be Asia. Unless of course, the Middle East, India and East Asia becomes their own continents too, Europe in reality is part of Asia just like the rest.

If Africa is connected to Asia like Europe is then it definitely should be considered part of Asia.

The Aryan Koreans use to believe that they are the descendants of the mighty Scythians, so you are to better understand their mentality of the Korean Master Race. :coffee:

there is nothing called master race. there are just different people all derived from same/similar roots.
