South Asia has never faired well in Olympics. The reason is lack of sports culture. Till recently parents would want their kids to just focus on studies and get a decent job. Sports was considered a diversion from the ultimate goal of landing a good job. It seems to be changing but would take decades. Other factors are poor nutrition, facilities, awareness etc.

Then comes role of sports governing bodies controlled by self serving politicians who just sit there and pass time and degrade it further. Even when sportsmen are made incharge of these bodies they also become politicians and get dirty.

Even in the sports that this region had a good grip have slipped out. Hockey and Squash are two examples that come to mind right away.

China too was in a similar state (not as bad though) but turned around its path by making sports a part of its culture. It was able to do that due to a different governance system that can’t be replicated in other countries that easily.

While trolling each other for bad genes and what not can continue in poor taste, the fact that this region has failed utterly on sports front is something that should make us all a little more humble. Ashamed would be a bit harsh but May also be apt here.

Education and sport can be hand in hand if we have competition like NCAA in every sport. Currently Indonesia has NCAA like competition only for basketball, so talented athletes can get educated in university due to their achievement in sport. For USA, they have NCAA in every sports so the competition in university level make their athletes become so good.

I am myselves is quite serious in basketball and almost every day play it at school and also in my home yard after school. I joined a famous basketball club during high school and become player for my faculty in university until my graduation.

If we cannot reach national level, then just work as usual people. At least sport during schools and university level make us more healty, strong, confidence, and motivated for study ( since studying al the time will make our living not quite happy). My brothers in other hand are good at musics and practice music during their university live, both are high achievers in their respective study.

Much brouhaha is made about India's perforamce..at least India manages to win medals...But 160+ Million Bangladesh has failed to win a single medal in 50 years!!! Even Pakistan does better as Pakistan has won a medal merely 29 years back....Is it due to Bangladeshi genetics?

We have other priorities then winning few medal in Olympic or any big tournament. What the benefit it would bring to common Bangladeshis if we will few gold except some pride. Actually same goes for India Pakistan too, better concentrating on human development improving their life standards. For very rich countries whose population are living much better then people of subcontinent can spare their time and resources for many tournament to achieve national pride .

Even for the sake of propaganda, it is not a bad proposition to propagate sports culture. Too many Ps.

One major benefit I can think of soft power and also the employment and companies they will support
