What's new

Why has BJP's 'Bangladeshi' rant worked in Assam but not in West Bengal?

Illegals have very little to do with today`s result , it is more due to anti-incumbency. Also BJP have popular candidates . Himanta and Sarbanada are liked by all. RSS, i doubt played any role at all. Infact they are hardly visible here in assam.

If anti incumbency did not work for 3 consecutive terms, why would it work now ?

It has to be something more than a simple anti incumbency. The scale of victory is massive, a landslide. Its a saffron sweep and the overriding agenda was to preserve Assam Identity, which is just an indirect way of asking the Bangladeshis to be kicked out.

The 'rant' if any has come from the general population and not BJP. It just happens to dovetail perfectly with BJP national outlook.

Nothing becomes insignificant when you are trying to polarise votes. Why i said huge, because they have as many shakhas in assam alone as any of the entire eastern front combined.
well,,,dont know ant future but as of now they r insignificant

illegal immigration was a key election issue in upper Assam,n tribal belts,,maybe not so much in othr places,,but an issue nonetheless.
aftr 2011 victory congress became arrogant,,,,open gundagiri by youth congresis,,,giving tickets to likes of Rumi nath,,,nepotism,,incumbency,,played thr role(ofcourse himanta, sonowal n gud strategy helped),,,bottomline, ppl wanted chnge,,,no more Congress

hati gol,haat gol,,,,

'Illegal Bangladeshi migrants' issue was a hot issue during election campaign. It worked in Assam for BJP against Tarun Gogoi but failed miserably in West Bengal against Mamata Banerjee.
Because Bengal BJP did not take up the issue at all during this election. It was a half hearted campaign with defeatist mind set without any significant political agenda.

@Nimitam The bolded part explains the anti-incumbency part. Mr. Gogoi was getting way more arrogant , there was a possibility that Tarun Gogoi would have started new dynasty politics in Assam.

Dynastic politics was not a possibility, it is a certainty in Assam congress.

Gogoi probably did not care much for congress as much as he cared for his son's career and his dynasty legacy.

My understanding is that the BJP and allies got almost 50% of the vote share. BJP alone got 60 seats. This is a pro BJP wave and not an anti congress wave.

.
Indigenous Assamese Muslims have voted for BJP.....BJP's Himanta Biswa Sarma accepted it. He also said 'illegal immigrant issue is not just a rant but they are seriously looking to fulfil what they have promised'.

.
you have no idea how illegal bangladeshis are hated in Assam. Even the Assamese Muslims have voted in masse for the BJP.

Aren't Bangladeshi Sylhetis ethnically Assamese? Why would Assamese Muslims hate their brethren?

@jaunty @zootinali @The Huskar

They know more about Assam than you who lives there.

RSS have been trying to get a foothold in Assam for a while. The first time I saw an RSS chaddi was in Delhi and I grew up in Assam. However the last time I went home I did see some khaki chaddis in upper Assam. So it has definitely gained some presence. But I am fully confident that it will never be a significant force in Assam.
