If India doesn't 'need' aid, why do foreign governments still give it?

Aid to India has been in the news a lot recently. India is growing so fast that it will be the second-largest economy in the world (after China) in a few decades. It has a space programme, a nuclear programme, and even an aid programme. So why do rich countries still give India aid? Fair question. But rather than an anomaly, is aid to India actually a blueprint for aid programmes of the future?

Indians alway brag about having lots of billionaires and their country is the fastest growing economy....so why give them aid when they are so well off ?

It would be much better to give the aid to countries that need it such as Africa and Latin America.

WORLD BANK LEND INDIA MONEY AND AFTER A TIME SPAN WE REFUND IT.
ALSO INDIA OFFER AID TO COUNTRIES LIKE AFGHANISTAN,AFRICAN COUNTRIES,PAKISTAN TOO(DURING FLOOD TIME).
SO ITS LIKE TAKE MONEY FROM RIGHT HAND AND DONATE MONEY FROM LEFT HAND.

The answer is in the article itself which the OTS has conveniently ignored or might have not read

The way the international community provides aid to India is a hint towards a new global aid compact, in which the old top-down donor-recipient relationships are replaced by respectful collaboration between sovereign countries: a state strong enough to say no, but wise enough to accept advice, support and appropriate financing.

Are you aware that China receives as much aid as India, give or take a few millions? Not trying to divert the topic here, just saying that aid need not be linked to how fast a country is growing.

And as for your usual flame one-liner at the end, I can also say that Pakistan does not deserve any aid since they keep 'boasting' that the aid does nothing to help their country anyway, :blah: :blah: :blah: - so why do you still keep asking for aid? Not very fair there, eh?

There is a difference between aid and loan...simple enough...We have some taken loans from WB,IMF,ADB etc.It is not aid actually.Aid is something that you do not have to return. As for example, the aid given to Pakistan during recent floods. But, you have to re pay the loans, once taken.

No doubt you are quoting the 2008 figure because the rest of the time China doesn't come close. And I hope in making your comparison you realize that aid sent to China that year was for disaster relief during the sichuan earthquake, something that other country do as a form of condolence just for that disaster not a yearly repeating payment.

Also 216 million of the 1.5 billion sent that year is from private overseas Chinese.

the aid which India recieves is in terms of loans which india pay back...these loans are generally taken by state governments for investing in Infrastructure ...

Well, when I look more closely at the data, I grant you that 2008 was the peak. But still, the original thread starter's contention is, "why is India bragging and still taking aid" or something to that effect, so the relevance of my post still stands. The Guardian has referred to both India and China in the past while referring to this aid business, I remember some article with a headline like "why do we help rich China" or something...
