Why does the pakistani Army have two MBT?

its hi-lo tier system AK is a bigger meaner smarter machine to thurst in enemy line majorly in south punjab and rajistan desert areas
AL zarrar is a smaller tank with nearly the same punch but for wood lands and as seen in war on terror gud for northren areas
some one more educated ll give u more info and correct me if im wrong

professionally all over the world, for effective and efficient mobility officers use only one type of vehicle, also its cost effective and maintenance is easy, unlike in Pakistan army.

What the hell it has to do with TANKS?

It is not about personal choice, tanks are needed in large numbers and we have tried to upgrade the old ones, acquire capability to produce local modern tanks and then acquire the most suitable foreign tank for our needs.

Al-Zarrar was just an upgrade on old tanks to keep them worthy of some action.
Al Khalid is a more modern tank with lots of planned upgrades both with local and foreign systems, not to mention Al-Khalid 2 which is going to be a major improvement. These are the tanks for which we shall have in house production.
And then there are the T-80UDs which are a mature platform and extremely potent.

Yeah I have noted this as well. There are number of similar platforms. Perhaps, the top brass is looking for variety so as to make things difficult for the enemy (trying to tackle different platforms, finding weaknesses of so many platforms etc)

I think different tanks are required mainly due to the different terrain it will operate in - each MBT will have its strength and weaknesses depending on its main operating area (soft, hard, desert, semi-desert etc conditions).

the T-80UD was a 'stop-gap' requirement until the AK was approved and inducted by the PA. ~300 are in the inventory.
the Al-Zarrar is not a MBT even though it is called as such. its a medium-tank - main purpose of the A-Zarrar is to train tank crews for the AK1. until we dont have enough AK1 or 11's in our inventory, the Al-Zarrar makes up the tank numbers. ~300-600.

why do you think Al-Zarrar is not a MBT? its roots can be traced to the type-59 and that can be linked to t-54/55 which is widely considered one of the first MBTs in the world, sure it took plenty of lessons from the medium tanks of WW2 that were produced in the USSR but non-the-less it is still a MBT

we can go into a long discussion but in short the parameters of a modern MBT are different than those MBT's produced during WW2/Korean war era. - modern tanks are heavier for eg; in tonnage.

Well in reality we will also get a third Al Khalid 2 as you know , so we are doing great when it comes to development of armored tanks

Each type of MBT has it own retirement date/time, it is normal to maintain 2 generations of MBT while looking foeward to a next generation. In PA's case AK1 is the current generation, AK2 the next generation, while AZ is an extended life upgrade.

Most countries are in same situation unless you are extremely rich, that you can afford to change entire MBT force in one batch.
