Why does Musk prefer to import from China instead of building a factory in India?

It's worse, it is the idiotic attitude. Everybody wants to buy a car come what may. The cars look ugly, uncomfortable, can't be driven at any speed, pollute, gas is expensive, ridiculous waste of import dollars, and even waste very precious urban space to park.

It is just a vestige of colonial Era aping.

Real Indian lifestyle culture society are all different but nonsensical bollywood , corruption, and unabashed aping .....the Chinese aped their way to glory so now we must ape them in aping too

Electricity reached our last batch of villages only last year.

Many cities do not have covered sewers, buried wires and cannot handle 2" of rapid rain.

More money is made under the table than legally.

I will wait for the pleasures of driving in India until after the above lunacy is resolved.

of course he's not a fool. The Chinese government are literally paying for all the cars he makes in China through state subsidies. That's 325 m$ in 2020, he then gets to sell those cars and make huge profits. Apart from all that the provincial government gave him free land and subsidized his factory construction as well. He'd be fool to not take full advantage of Chinese generosity.

India has a total national highway length of more than 150,000 km, soon to expand to 200,000km. Highways are not as good as expressways, but good enough for us, the difference is that they are not access controlled, and have fewer lanes(2-3 each side , as opposed to expressway which has at least 3-4 each side), also 2 wheelers and tractors are allowed to use it.

This is what average national highways looks like, it is not expressway quality, but it is still a high speed road.

With only four lanes, it is really only suitable for donkeys, not cars. Is this a national highway?

Four lanes should be the standard of township level roads, and national level roads should be like this:

China subsidize all EVs and people who buy EVs, it's no secret. Tesla has it's who supply chain in China, so for each Tesla sold, China makes no less money than Musk, this is why Modi hates made in China Teslas.

The subsidies and land given by the Ohio State Government to China Fuyao Group are far more than those given by the Chinese government to Tesla. Moreover, the Chinese government only gave the land use right, and the Ohio State government gave Fuyao Group the land ownership.

Thank you Tesla for supporting so many Chinese supplier business and employ so many Chinese workers in China while the ordinary american eat dirt and jobless with only 1% of elite american enjoy the fruit of Tesla sales..... :enjoy:

But fact remains a base Model 3 cost the same in the US about 46 kUSD as it does in China even with Chinese state customer subsides of about 3,000$'s per vehicle, per customer. While the central government provides about 10k USD in manufacturer subside to Tesla per Model 3. I can bet you, Tesla makes much more in profits in China than it does here in the US. So point remains Musk is no fool.

Tesla has only one model, model 3, which enjoys subsidies. Customers in China can enjoy a subsidy of 11088CNY (US $1600) when purchasing model 3. This subsidy is for all new energy vehicles priced below 300000 CNY, and is not exclusive to Tesla.


Tesla sold 212041 model 3 in China in 2021, so it received a subsidy of 2.35 billion yuan. Plus the export tax rebate subsidy of about 1 billion CNY. Tesla's total subsidy in 2021 is 3.35 billion CNY ($480 million). The total subsidy is second only to BYD. This is all the subsidies Tesla gets, not the manufacturing subsidies you said.
