More so than that taking part in elections means nothing because wanting a solution to one's domestic issues (employment, infrastructure etc.) and what your opinion is on the final settlement of one's land are two mutually exclusive issues. Otherwise throughout the British Indian Independence Movement numerous parties would not have been participating in the Elections up till the middle of WW2, forming Ministries, getting to sit on the Viceroy's Council and forming Governments in later elections because the British were in no mood to give British India independence till they found their position in their colonies untenable when the Third Reich proved to be more than a nuisance.
