Why did China not use ballistic missiles during the Vietnam war in 1979?

In 1979 China had DF-11 missiles, they were able to shoot into Vietnamese territory, I think China did not want to escalate the military.

I understood Vietnamese air defense was quite strong at the time, but they were unable to fight ballistic missiles

Clearly it is NOT WISE to escalate to a point of permanent estrangement with a neighbor nation that shares a thousand years of cultural exchange.
China not out to devastate Vietnam like what the US did with their carpet bombing and AGENT ORANGE.

Because Vietnam was protected by USSR nuclear umbrella.

Attacking other countries by ballistic missiles is pure madness because both Vietnam and USSR didn’t know if China armed them with nukes.

Would China risk a nuclear war of total annihilation for the sake of Cambodia?

For the same reason why China didn't just swipe over the rest of Vietnam. A bigger invasion was never an option nor the efforts worth it.

This conflict didnt happen in isolation. The Soviet Union as well as the U.S. where on Chinas neck before the war even started and where both taking a strong position against a real invasion of Vietnam and backed it up militarily and politically even if just as a disposeable pawn much like the U.S. encourages Vietnamese delusions today to keep Asia divided.

It had absolutely nothing to do with the pathetic "resistance" of Vietnam as far as you can consider waiting out in the bush behind the red line drawn by the Soviets and USA a resistance, that is glorified by Vietnamese revisionist and Western red scare propraganda which prioritizes China as the greater "threat".

First, you promote arrogance, support Chinese aggression, second, saying Vietnam as kid is a typical phrase of big China. Germany has less people how can you call a country with larger population as kid? Vietnam has nearly 100 million, well above 80 million Germans. Hence I concluded you are Chinese.

DF-11 is a short-range SRBM missile, it is not an ICBM. the wars between Iran-Iraq all show this, even the first Gulf war, Iraq has used Scud missile (similar DF-11) to attack the base of United States at Saudi without encountering resistance like force US ICBM

Last time I checked, USA doesn't have military base in China and it can't dictate China's foreign policy. China can and does stand on its own feet economically, politically and militarily on international stage.
