Why CPEC is haunting Guardian Newspaper? At least I don't know

Hi '

Please read my concern , post 148
What's your view on cpec, and some proposal for road link to china in the north east of India ..?

Even though trade is already taking place , don't you think roadways will open the flood gates unless it's strictly regulated?

Yes there must be some regulation....but done in concert with where India's skill training and MUDRA financing is mostly directed....they must be given protection from dumping in such areas till they are themselves able to withstand by themselves.

But we cannot over-regulate every single thing....especially if they are inputs for much value added production chains. Lets say we import some item from China....if the potential employment generated by putting tariff/quota on it (or banning it altogether in some way) is much less than the employment that it is already supporting + employment it will generate (at the price level being sold)....then there is no reason to regulate this as much as say something like steel.....at least until we get our skilled employment way above the level it is now (so there is actual good steady supply of skilled labour to manufacturers at low cost so they can then price appropriately).

Most Chinese goods cannot really resort to walmart tactics either (outprice and kill every local supplier and then ramp up price)...because of the relatively low elasticities of the production of such consumer goods....they generally do not need tons of capex, but just conducive labour policies and large labour pool. Those are things that India specifically can address relatively easily (its policy for the most part)....and then undercut at the appropriate time. Only huge capex industries must be protected as much as possible from dumping (steel, auto etc.)

Basically there must be a top down review of where the comparative advantages are and focus on exploiting that...rather than trying to better every single absolute advantage....which is a slippery slope to protectionism and inefficiency.

Pakistan was made for the Muslims of subcontinent. Even in Muslims some of the people opposed the creation of Pakistan, yet it was made taking into account the majority of the people.

Today those who oppose any project good for Pakistan, on PDF or elsewhere, is simply continuation of that trend. They'll keep on doing that and the work'll go on.

Regarding the issue of CPEC and Baluchistan, the province has very small population, that'll saturate in few years. Others to come and live for the expanding business is inevitable. Like Karachi has absorbed people from every part of the country, the ideal example for Gawader and Baluchistan because real life there will just begin now.

Muslims of Indian Subcontinent. Even few of them opposed. Like some people still object any good project. The point is.

Did these people have any contribution in the making of Pakistan?

Pakistan wasn't made by them and for them!!

It wasn't made by military or jihadis either.

China is making CPEC into Pakistan and expand itself into Pakistani markets to the detriment of local industry. Any thoughts on that, Sir?
Is Pakistan giving duty free/preferential access to Pakistani markets to China ?

Because if Pakistan is not giving duty free access, then Pakistani industries have a chance to compete. Govt levies will keep Chinese products more expensive than local ones.

But if duty free & preferential access is being given - then God save Pakistan! In a decade, there will not be much left off in terms of economic manufacturing except for raw material supply.

I agree with you that CPEC is a promising project, yes. But not to the extent it is being hyped. It will help Pakistan create a second port, and develop good roads and rail links. Trade with China will increase, yes. That is it, and it should be enough for Pakistan to improve its economic condition. The center of world trade it will never be, however.

CPEC is the only man made structure visible from distant space. Extraterrestrial creatures coming to earth will first grab the attention of this route.

Means it isn't first miracle of the world. There has never been one center of world trade, several domains work. Pakistan will achieve maximum by connecting east and west and north and south.

I expect there'll be 'make in Pakistan' kind of scenario. It suits Pakistan being in the trade route.
