Why Chinese movies like to set background place in Thailand?

Chinese movies, especially those about violences, like to set background place in Thailand, or other Southeast countries. Censorship from the government is small part of reason. The real reason is modern China is not a good place for violent movie plot. Good violent movies should have these factors: fierce gun shootings, gangsters, street chase, cruel crimes, corrupt policemen, evil rich men, drug, kidnapped girls, prostitutes.... China can not offer all them. I'm not saying China has completely eliminated violent crimes. Violent crimes in China are rare and not eye catching. Last year, 4 girls were beaten by a group of gangsters in a restaurant in Tangshan city( None of the 4 girls died), which became headline report in all media. No one would buy ticket to see story like this in cinemas.

For movie directors, China is a boring place. Jungle worlds like US, Latin American countries, Southeast Asian countries, are heaven for movie directors. China is the heaven for ordinary people.

Also, screenplay writers aren’t allowed to show that CCP manupalating the crime stats in China; as this will impact their social credit scores.

In fact, China should produce a blockbuster film showing how the amazing social credit score system - based on a person’s daily behavior including online shopping - has eradicated any hint of wrongdoing in this great nation.

To better understand these strategic considerations and the political sensitivities that drive them, we explore why the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) promptly highlights some domestic terrorist incidents in the official media, but acknowledges others slowly or not at all. Drawing on original datasets of all Uighur terrorist violence in China and the official media coverage of that violence in the People's Daily, we demonstrate that the CCP consistently favors stability over the legitimacy. Highlighting terrorist violence in the official media can satisfy the public’s demand for transparency and bolster foreign relations, but our findings indicate that the CCP is only willing to reap these rewards when domestic and international conditions are favorable enough to ensure that the risks to stability are manageable.

When Hong Kong movies were popular, there were many movies with Thailand as the background.

Relatively speaking, the law and order in Vietnam is better, and neither is Myanmar. Vietnamese police often extort Chinese tourists. Of course, these so-called Chinese tourists have reasons for being punished in some respects and thus are selectively enforced.

However, Vietnam's police do not have the same collusion with organized crime as Thailand, Cambodia, and Myanmar.

Most gang/crime film would require real firearms (or firing props) and production company usually choose either Thailand or Philippine for their movie because it's easier to access prop firearms in Thailand and Philippine than in China, Hong Kong or Japan.

On the other hand, filming in China requires to deal with a lot of red tape (like government involvement and so on), most foreign production company do not shoot in China unless they have the corporation with the Chinese government.
