Why Chennai can't and won't speak Hindi

.
We can perfectly read through your point you try to make here.
Denial of Hindi does not make one less Indian. This is not 'One Unit'.

You are avoiding stating the facts about Tamils' dislike for Hindi :)

This is a fact. The movements against Hindi had been started much before even British rule.

So you cant hide behind snapshots against me

India needs a 3 language formula:

In the North- Hindi, English and one of the 4 Dravidian languages

In the South - Mother tongue, English and Hindi

In my opinion, Sanskrit should also be taught to all at some level.

Hindi imposition in Tamil Nadu started in 1937 when the Congress Government of the Madras Presidency under C. Rajagopalachari (Rajaji) made Hindi a compulsory subject in schools. (The British were still the rulers of the Indian subcontinent at that time but elected local governments in the Provinces were installed under the British rule. Madras Presidency was a province that included much of present Tamil Nadu and parts of present Andhra Pradesh.) Tamils opposed Hindi imposition immediately and Sir A. D. Panneerselvam and E.V. Ramaswamy (he would later be known as Periyar or "the great one") organized anti-Hindi imposition protests in 1938. Two of the arrested protesters, Thalamuthu and Natarajan, died in prison in January 1939. These were the first deaths relating to anti-Hindi agitations. There would be many more, in much bloodier circumstances due to police and army shootings, in the years to come.

The 1940s, 50s and the first half of the 1960s saw many anti-Hindi imposition protests in the form of public meetings, marches, hunger strikes, demonstrations before schools and Indian government offices, and black flag demonstrations before visiting Indian government ministers. Most of these were organized either by the DK or the DMK, and the general public supported them fully. There were several hundred such protests around Tamil Nadu and several thousand people went to jail. Several hundreds were injured when police used lathi charge (charge with wooden sticks) to disburse peaceful protesters.

Things came to a boil in January-February 1965 and the events showed the pent-up frustration and anger of the Tamil public against Hindi imposition. Unlike most of the previous demonstrations, these were NOT organized by DK, DMK or any other political party. These events started with the strikes organized by Tamil Nadu Students Anti-Hindi Agitation Council on January 25 and 26, 1965. The public at large rose up against Hindi imposition across party lines, caste differences, religious divides and economic-social strata. The mass popular swell of opposition to Hindi imposition scared the Hindian politicians who dominated and controlled the Indian government. The Indian government put down the agitation brutally befitting any ruthless dictator. Indian security forces massed into Tamil Nadu to crush the peaceful, unarmed agitation shot and killed well over a hundred unarmed Tamils (not a single demonstrator was armed during the agitation) in just one week in February. Thousands more were maimed for life and many more wounded. Indian government's actions were so brutal that even the United Nations (UN) took note of the situation and discussed it; this was one of the rare instances of United Nations discussing the internal situation of a country.

"This is a fact. The movements against Hindi had been started much before even British rule." - I am deep in the South now. I don't know the local languages. My brother is also studying in South. So if there is a hatred for Hindi I don't know - I have not faced it. May be you lived longer than me - so know more. :azn:

Two days back a comment in TOI ran for more than 10 pages. Today a Facebook post. Indian members - you are better off not commenting and allow the thread to die.

Just a while ago you were saying India never existed and all that crap ! :hitwall: WTF man! Make a stand.
Btw - Remember Nanking?

Yes, "India is merely a geographical expression. It is no more a single country than the equator." Winston Churchill
Until 1947. So I was correct.

Nanking ? but we still have our own country.

.
India has lot of official Languages. India is a successful experiment. Lets keep it like that.

with due time a common language like hinglish or some thing will emerge which is acceptable to all.

A quote of Churchill defines a country? Is he God? :hitwall:
"we still have our own country" - which one exactly - People's Republic of China or Republic of China? :omghaha:

Nanking or not, we still have our own country.

@fatty wants a finger in every pie... What an idea to quote Churchill... Does enough to reveal your slavish mentality

Indians care 2 hoots about what the idiot Churchill rambled about in his drunken delusion. If India has not been a nation...no country ever was.... The Civilizational unity of India far exceeds any nation...including China...

the one who needs to die is you and end your misery in PDF , the Anti Hindi Imposition agitations started in 1930s peaked in 1960s and is still on going .... Tamils will resist Hindi imposition but they are not anti any language including English, given a choice the would prefer Korean, Japanese or even Chinese over Hindi

LOL

This is classic example of " Begani Shadi Mein Abdullah Diwana" !

Indians make fun of Chinese & someone flying a Malaysian flag is getting ants in the pants.

@ Subject, Indians are ok with Tamilians not speaking Hindi - being so diverse there are so many regions that do not speak each others language- so what is the concern here ?

Now, just in case you feel Hindi is the national language therefore Tamilians should speak it, even much smaller countries like Pakistan have this issue. Urdu is not spoken everywhere.

Such things happen...Relax

.
:) atleast we do have a national language. and oh BTW we thank the invaders due to whom we got the national language and you got the hurt burn opsss no you got Indian Mughals

You must thanks Chinese that 62 war brought TN to your national folds once again.

Many urban Punjabis can't speak Punjabis but they speak only Urdu. Some Pakistanis told me these things and they were feeling very happy that all Pakistanis are going to speak Urdu.

.
Tamil staying or working in other states have no choice but to learn and speak the language of that state out of compulsion.

We are talking about Tamils' dislike for Hindi in their own state.

Even those who can speak prefer to reject it.

Hindi was opposed when we are forced to learn and it'll get opposed if we are get forced in the future. We are not against Hindi, we are against forcing us to learn Hindi, still in all Matriculation schools in Tamil Nadu, Hindi is there as a subject that everyone from Tamil Nadu knows.
