If you look at Bhutanese history, it is closely related with Tibet (unified by the Tibetan lama and military leader Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal who had fled religious persecution in Tibet)

Good enough reason for remaining away from China.

Religiously, they have Buddhism and Hinduism as two largest religions

Geographically surrounded by India on three sides

They know, getting close to China can result in its annexation just like tibet

The Chinese ports are thousands of miles away while the Indian one is just a few hundred miles away.
