Of course you need a good aim to shoot anything, including shotguns. The point here is that you dont need to focus on sniping out targets because semi automatic shotguns spit out enormous firepower. Nothing really survives the cluster.

Shotgun with a 12g SG with a load of 11 / 21 pellets and a smooth bore with a non modified cylinder bore choke has the 40/40 rule ( 40 yards range, 40 inch spread ). Great if you are close enough but beyond 35 yards you really need to have a modified or full choke or use a slug round, so you would need to aim.
