Read up about Ahmed Shah Massoud. And don't read the Taliban version. Massoud was on the same side as Islamic state of Afghanistan. Massoud never controlled south and east of Kabul. How can he show brutality there?

Afghan people strongely dislike puppets, taliban must have realized after 1996 that they are too much of puppets of pakistan so they started showing attitude and refused many demands and orders of Pakistan. Karzai is also aware that puppets have no place in afghan history so he is doing same with america.
The section of afghan society who are supporting today taliban are the ones in rural population who got affected by military operations and air strikes, they are simply seeking revenge , for which taliban is providing them plateform. The educated afghan pashtuns of towns and cities see taliban as pakistani agents....
Rural pashtuns of eastern afghanistan are not aware of the relationships of ISI with haqqani network, if they ever realize that HN are tainted by association with ISI, they might stop supporting them.
