President al-Assad meets Indian Minister of State for External Affairs

20 August، 2016

Damascus, SANA – President Bashar al-Assad received on Saturday Indian Minister of State for External Affairs Mubashir Javed Akbar and the accompanying delegation.

Talks during the meeting discussed the situation in Syria and the dangers of terrorism on the region and the world.

The close relations between Syria and India that have been consolidated over decades were highlighted, with both sides expressing desire in developing bilateral cooperation in various domains.

President al-Assad said the fact that many friendly countries, including India, have stood by the Syrian people has concretely reflected on boosting Syria’s steadfastness in the face of the war waged against it by foreign and regional states.

These states, he said, have used the terrorist organizations in their war on Syria, supporting them in various ways, and have so far worked on obstructing efforts at finding a peaceful solution that would bring the bloodshed and destruction to an end and stop the crimes inflicted by the terrorists upon the Syrian people.

The President affirmed in this context that the Syrian people are determined to continue defending their homeland and the unity of their country despite all the pressure and suffering they have to bear, be it on the security, economic and daily life levels.

The Indian official, for his part, highlighted the importance of cooperation with Syria in the field of combating terrorism and consolidating the Syrians’ achievements in this regard.

It would be a mistake not to realize the dangers of terrorism and its aim of spreading death and extremism, jeopardizing world stability and destroying the human civilization, said Akbar.

He stressed that India is ready to offer all that could help in alleviating the suffering of the Syrian people and contribute effectively to the development process and reconstruction in Syria.

In the same context, Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign and Expatriates Minister Walid al-Moallem met the Indian minister, expressing Syria’s readiness to cooperate and coordinate with the Indian side in the fight against terrorism in the common interests of both countries which are facing the same adversary.

During the meeting, the Indian minister voiced his country’s rejection of foreign interference in the internal affairs of states, warning that terrorism is a threat that knows no boundaries.

He stressed India’s support for reaching a political solution for the crisis in Syria by the Syrians themselves in a way that preserves Syria’s sovereignty and unity.

Now two clear things I take out from is

1. India still considers Al Asad the Legitimate head of state , when our External Affairs ministry hold meetings with him.

2. The use of word terrorism over ISIS, this does indicate India's stance over "Moderate Terrorists of West ".

Chaotic syria keeps EU & USTy and focus their leftists to home base...
If not Syria , they will find another nation in Mid East to wage their WAR ON TERROR and BRING DEMOCRACY kind of crap.

But Asad when he last visited India promised India preferential treatment in its petroleum sector , and yesterday , when India seeks to combat terrorism jointly , it does refer to Kashmir, and there are not a very large number of Nations especially from Arab world who side with us on this.

We lost an ally in form of Iraq earlier , we should not commit the same mistake again.

true but since syria is at the far end of the arab world , i'd rather it be there than here.

he can't help us, he can't help himself. let him work it out in syria. As far as petrol is concerned , with commodity prices all time low and not projected to reach high again i'd say we are in the green.

lol I never said we should lose him. I just said we should not get involved. but chaos in syria = destablized EU and tense US = benefit for us (Asians )

It has nothing to do with the highlighted portion. The following points may be considered:

1. A principled Indian stand of recognition of a legitimate Government as recognized by UN itself. The UN itself recognizes the Assad government as the government of Syria. That is the first and foremost rationale of Indian stance.

2. The fact is that Syrian and Iraqi Regular Army forces, the legitimate forces of the respective governments, are fighting the ISIS and AQ, both groups known to evoke sectarian emotions and exploit them. With a significant Muslim population, these groups are a threat for India itself. Hence, any legitimate force and government fighting against these groups will receive Indian backing.

3. Prolonged regional instability has direct repercussions for India in both internal security and for India's Kashmir Policy in long run.

These are the only deciding factors that influence Indian policy. Rest all is ancillary and not of great significance for India.

India used to be a " non-aligned" country like the majority of Arab countries, but now it is more US-aligned through Usrael..so whatever the USrael policy in the Area.. India will follow it.. only now things got a bit more complicated , since it has to please Russia too..!!!

Agree that implications of Syria (direct )in India will be less compared to say Afghanistan or Iraq.

The only side which can help us is his , and he is surely helping himself , West is working hard to keep a few kilometres wide area open for Aleppo against the ground forces of Al Asad and Shia militias of Iran. And the beseige should happen anytime , and remember this is when Russia has withdrawn much of the support after the agreement with US.

Of course we should not get involved militarily , but politically yes if we want the benefits.

However I agree to you that low oil prices now means we are not compelled.

Yes because we were friends with Iran all these years because of orders from US and Israel.

Part of a release of MEA

In a continuing dialogue process with the leadership of Syria, Hon’ble Minister will pay a courtesy call on the President of the Republic of Syria His Excellency Bashar al-Assad and Prime Minister His Excellency Imad Mohammad Deeb Khamis. He will have bilateral discussions with first Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates His Excellency Walid Al-Moallem. He will also meet the National Security Advisor Ali Mamlouk and interact with the Grand Mufti of Syria Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun during this visit. The discussions would focus on our bilateral cooperation and the unfolding security situation in the region.

When the non-aligned Arabs ganged up with Pakistan against our Kashmir cause, we had to search for alternatives. And this situation is nothing new, we managed relation with Iran at the height of western sanctions on them.

Nothing called 'good' Taliban.
Nothing called 'good' terrorist.
These are evasions used by those who don't scruple to use terror as an instrument of state policy.
Assad's regime may have been dictatorial and inhuman.
That does not mean that terrorist tactics could be used against him and his supporters.
If his people rose up in revolt, the outside world can - should - take note of it and nothing more, unless directly affected; unless one or more neighbouring countries is flooded with Syrian refugees, they do not have the right to interfere.

"Akbar will then proceed to Syria where he will meet President Bashar al-Assad and Prime Minister Emad Mohammad Deeb Khamis besides minister of foreign affairs and expatriates Walid Al-Moallem, national security advisor Ali Mamlouk and interact with the grand mufti of Syria Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun.

“Discussions will focus on our bilateral cooperation and the unfolding security situation in the region,” Swarup said.

India has been looking at rebuilding infrastructure in Syria, including a power plant in the country. According to the Indian government, its economic engagement in the West Asia-North Africa region totals an estimated $200 billion."

Sorry , but there is nothing true in your statement above.. The GCC is still the biggest world trade partner of india..India had to get the US permission to trade with Iran , mainly in one sens oil trade to sustain Indias economy, otherwise...we all know the consequences for India.. theonly choice it took without any constraints is to befriend Usrael and play covertly on its side..
India is no friend of Arab or Muslim countries, it is a well known fact.. India had turned its back 9stabbed Iran in theback) just a day before the UN sanctions were to be approved in the UN, With India\s vote against them they couldn't have passed.. 30 years ago..already
The Muslims are new to these games of own interests, but they are fast learners.. and doinggood at it by now
