interesting note:

'In terms of Section 95 Cr P C read with Sections 153A and 295A I P C every copy of a book is liable to be forfeited to the government if the book contains words or sayings which promote, on ground of religion, disharmony, enmity, hatred or ill-will between different religious communities or which outrage the religious feelings of any class of citizens of India or insult the religion or religious beliefs of that class of people. This is so whether the book is classic or epic, religious or temporal, old or new.'

'For example, the Quran incites violence by saying, 'Believers! make war on the infidels who dwell around you. Let them find harshness in you' (Surah 9: ayat 123) or by saying, 'Do not yield to the unbelievers, but fight them strenuously with this Koran' (Surah 25: ayat 52) or by saying, 'If you do not fight He will punish you sternly and replace you by other men' (Surah 9: ayat 39) or by saying, 'When the sacred months are over, slay the idol-worshippers, wherever you find them. Arrest them, besiege them and lie in ambush everywhere for them' (Surah 9: ayat 5)'.

Most of these quotes are from the era of Battle of Badr. Muslims were not allowed to do violence up until that point, but when war seemed inevitable, the revelation came down allowing them to fight. But in that context its an order based upon self-defence, not just randomly start fighting. And of course the translations in the above are not precise.

Were / are Meccans idol Worshipers ?

Pretty much.

Implying thereby that they were not Muslims ?

Or was it something else ?

yes, during that time in Arabia, there was no unity among clans/tribes, women were ill treated to a high degree and there was no peace.
prophet Mohammed in other words brought peace to the region.
refer a beautiful documentary:Life of Mohammed

pardon if I said wrong I am not too much well versed.

Well the Quran does incite violence but it proclaims peace more than anything

If you quote out of context obviously you will see nothing but that Quran is a violent book, but just once, try to read in context you will see even the violent quotes are for a reason.
Plus most of the violent quotes the Islamophobes pick out are during the war with the Meccans, and you can understand the Muslim anger torwards the Meccans.

You are right.... But if that was the case world would have been much peaceful now.......

The reason why Quran is considered a violent book in the non-muslim world has nothing to do with the explicitly violent passages. As rightly pointed out by many posters, such passages are common in most scriptures and can be easily quoted out of context. I think the real reason lies in Islam being an admittedly expansionist religion with a duty cast on the believers to disseminate the "true" message of god to non Muslims through any means, violence included. At least, that has been the experience of countries unfortunate enough to come under Islamic rule.

That said, Islam can be considered far more honorable as it is upfront in its aims and the use of sword compared to Christianity which often seeks to convert through deceit and blackmail.

come on dude in which nation have u seen christians converting by deceit and blackmail,ur knowledge of worldly religion sucks, in christian world u are free to practice any religion thats why muslims and hindus are freely practising their religion in europe and many such christian nations, well can u say the same in muslim nations .conversions to christianity is made by preaching word of god ,and by preachings of thomas, paul and many such apostles has christianity expanded to what it is today,
christianity would have never survived if it tried to expand by war like islam.as for u supporting islam saying islam is far more honorable go visit other nations or try to google about the religion as a atheist

Sati system, untouchables did they existed for good? our system has also some big question marks ,so let's not point on others.

Hindutva itself contains a plethora of militaristic/intolerant rhetoric and beliefs; some tend to conveniently overlook that

the Christians and Muslims in hindustan seemed to have learned that the hard way it seems

not a good idea perhaps..religious reforms must come from with in the community..if it is coerced upon then we have to see another riots..constitutionally every religious community has a fundamental right to preach their on religion and establsih their on educational institutions any infringement to it and u may directly appeal to the supereme.this is a delecate case im sure court considers it with caution..it sure do not want to give a hand to the right wing extremists in the country be it hindus or muslims.

I wasnt pointing...... But was making a point that Idiots read holy books out of context...... Holy books are there on all the religions ( please do not read quran there)

Thank you for your sales pitch.:azn:

Which nation? Well I'm talking about Christian conversions in India. It is all generally deceit and inducements unlike Islam which is growing mainly by it's population growth.

This is Hubris .......if people acted with common sense and rational thought then there was never any need for religious books.

Religious books recognize the fact that people are not rational creatures. Rationality has to be invoked or for in case of Abrahmic religions, emotion is over ruled by another stronger emotion called faith.

Last point is about Hinduism ...... kindly show ANY verse in Hinduism that causes communal disharmony.

Kindly do not play this zero sum game where 'secular' Indians gets to play equal equal with Abrahamic religions.

As I said earlier, it depends up on " interpretations ", every religious scholar of their respective religions interpret that these verses in a way that they they look good, often what they do is change the original context, twist the meaning of word, etc.

since you asked for a link I will give you one, go check it if you can handle the bad language used in there.
BUTT-NAKED HINDUISM: LET THE VEDAS SPEAK: Violence in Hindu scripture
Besides, there are many verses of manu smreti, vedas, gita etc books which is hostile to women and communities other than brahmins. you may have good looking interpretations for those verses, and that's what every religious scholars from Islam and Christianity do with such verses on their respective holy books, and that's a good thing for peace, womens empowerment, communal harmony. morals and ethics.

Problem with the believers is that they read other one's religious scriptures critically and apply rationality, they will find many things written in it as bad, but they fail do the same when it comes to his own religious scriptures, he will some how find most beautiful interpretations, no matter what, as I said earlier it's better than sticking with some bad interpretation and behave like a moron.

yes a few hindu scriptures may contain violent preachings but theres not any hard and fast rule that people have to study it and implement them..im sure theres at most a hand few people who study our religious texts here.hinduism evolved according to age..even the untouchbility which was a part of convention then is a severe crime now ..and people have accepted it .untouchbility disappearing now..similar is the case with sati or widow marriages their just past..so india is more a welfare state than a secular state if the state feels that religion is threatening the social structure it may intervene.at the same time our constitution gives ample freedom to preach follow any religion with out raising a communal feeling against other religions.singing a national anthem is not compulsory in india if it thretens ur religion !!!( bible says praise the lord but no one else)..and just as there are right wing extremists in your country there are people in mine..nothing exceptional.minorities in pakistan have even lesser rights compared to what minorities in india has.every sect of islam is country is treated to be a muslim here and they have their freedom to practice it

Expansionism in Islam is encouraged but not through war but through conversions or of course procreation.
