One has to be stupid to make public the connections between him and the US when the United states didn't want to make a fuss about its relationship and full support for the Mujahideen in Afghanistan. It would have had implications as the US wanted to stay below radar and keep supporting them without admitting it to Soviets which could have angered them even further and the conflict would have widened.
