What Will Happen To Putin's Approval Ratings Once Russia's Economy Plummets?

Well, Capital flight in Russia is indeed real, and it will only get even worse with time as the sanctions keep biting, making investors/russian officials/oligarcs/corrupt officials move their money from a risky Russia to a safer place in the west/U.S. As i siad Putin has overplayed his hands, The sanctions wont be lifted anytime soon, as long as Russia continues its support to its seperatists in eastern Ukraine(he even recognized their illegal elections recently, which was condemned by the international community/E.U/U.S). so things will get worse befoe they get any better anytime soon. So dont expect the sanctions to be lifted anytime soon, it indeed might even be increased if Putins continues with his policies in eastern Ukraine. And to be honest i dont see him stopping at all, he seems to have crossed a point of no return.

So expect things to get even worse for Russia these coming years, reason Japan should be cautious with its approach with Russia as well, since our governments in the west/U.S still have issues with Moscow, and Japan needs to show its with the international community/abide by world rules/laws. Russia by going head on against the west/U.S alone, will find out that it might think its a big power, but we are a bigger power for now, and it will only slow its economy down even further than it was already, Its an 'emerging' country, yet its growth rate is now the lowest among BRICS and even the developing world, the hell even western developed countries like U.K are now growing faster than Russia.:woot: which shouldnt be the case at all, judging Russia still has room for growth(low GDP per capital). This is without talking about all the Russian billionaires emmigrating to the west/U.S every year(there are lots of them here in London alone), if Russia was such a nice place to invest/live for them, im sure they wont be leaving the country in droves, so expect the capital flights to only get worse coupled with sanctions, my guess is it will top over 300billion(more than Vietnams entire GDP) by next year. Anyway lets just keep enjoying the show.:pop:

You really think it will be that much? $300 Billion is insane. Where are these Russian billionaires / millionaires going to anyways? I hear there is a large Russian presence in London, one of the largest group of real estate buyers are Russians. Can you verify?

That would practically nullify the recent Sino-Russian Energy Agreement (worth $400 billion).

'Beloved Ruler'? hmmmmmmmmmm
Wouldn't it be better for Mother Russia to first grow in actual power by focusing on the economy like the Chinese. IF you fight the EU/US now, Russia's potential to once again become a global power will fade like Invisible Ink.

Russia is a military superpower and an energy superpower.

China is still a developing country. We have a long way to go before we reach the power level of Russia.

.
Russians always valued honor of Motherland higher than individual wealth. This is one of the Russian national characteristics. We always choose to be poor but free than rich, but slaves.
Russia in any case will be one of the poles of power in the 21st century.
Fine. Screw Individual wealth. But at least grow the collective wealth. You can't hold EU hostage using your gas forever. They'll move on in time.
Much better to take their help now and grow your economy at 6% plus for a few decades all the while increasing their dependence upon Russian resources and then using diplomacy to forward your goals.

.
Nothing. Money is fake. Production is real. Russia makes millions of bullets and shells annually. Millions of Ukrops will get slaughtered.

Rouble tumbles as Russia abandons multi-billion dollar currency support | Daily Mail Online

MOSCOW, Nov 5 (Reuters) - The rouble tumbled on Wednesday after Russia's central bank effectively abandoned the trading corridor for the currency, halting the multi-billion dollar daily interventions that had propped it up through sanctions and plunging oil revenues.

The bank announced it would limit daily interventions to just $350 million a day, saying this would mean the currency's price would now largely be set by the market, although it stopped short of formally abolishing the trading corridor.

The rouble, which has already lost almost a quarter of its value since the middle of this year, fell sharply, briefly reaching 45 roubles per dollar in late trade, its record-lowest. At 1550 GMT, the rouble was down 2.4 percent against the dollar at 44.67.

This article is 2 days old and right now, it's at 45.626.

2 steps backward, 1 step forward, 2 steps backward, 1 step forward...

Which hostages? What kind of nonsense? Russia supplies gas to Europe since the 70s, since the Cold War. It's just business.
Do you think the Russian authorities specifically inhibit economic development? Russia develops more slowly than we would like, but develops. Industrial production is growing, despite the sanctions.
But I repeat again - it is better to be poor but free than rich, but part of the West, that is a slave.

The proportion of Russians who don’t like the policies of the US President’s has surged from 12% in 2009 to 76% this year according to new research.

The opinion poll conducted by the independent Levada Center also shows that the percentage of Russians with a positive attitude towards Barack Obama fell from 21 percent to just 2 percent during the same time period.

Five years ago most Russians – 51 percent – said they were neutral towards the American leader and this year only 16 percent said the same. Sixty-seven percent of this year’s responders said that relations between the two countries had become worse than under George W. Bush.

In 2009, 29 percent of those interviewed said they expected relations between Russia and the United States to improve during Obama’s presidency. This year the number of optimists fell to a mere 9 percent.

In the same poll researchers asked the Russian public about their attitude to the heads of state of Germany, France and the UK. All three European leaders claimed approximately the same level of support – 8 percent of responders had a positive attitude towards Angela Merkel, 5 percent towards Francois Hollande and 4 percent to David Cameron. When it comes to a negative image among the Russian public Merkel was first with 50 percent, followed by Cameron with 35 percent, and Hollande with 30 percent.

In comments to the Izvestia daily Deputy Director of the Levada Center, Aleksey Grazhdankin, said that the sharp fall in Obama’s popularity in Russia must be caused by the fact that Russians blame Western leaders, and most of the entire US President, for the ongoing crisis in Ukraine and for the economic sanctions against their country. “These actions are considered at best as unfriendly but most people think of them as of direct hostility,” the researcher said.

Another poll conducted by the VTSIOM agency in late September showed that the overwhelming majority of Russians considered the United States to be the main enemy of their country. This negative share grew from 25 percent in 2008 to 73 percent currently. Other countries Russians perceive as hostile are Germany and the European Union in general at 10 percent, Great Britain at 9 percent, Poland 6 percent, Canada 3 percent, and France 3 percent.

- Rouble is going down

- Oil prices are low

Russians claim that everything is going nicely... topkek. Talk about living in denial.

The weaker the ruble, the cheaper the Russian prices on the international market. This means higher exports and lower imports and that's good for economy.

Theres nothing risky in Russia and falling ruble makes it even more profitable place for investment. And forget already about "safer place in West/US" lol this is the place there your money can be frozen and seized any time for no reason. Actually all Russian business are pulling money and assets out of the West back to Russia non stop.

. . .
Nothing will happen.Russian people are quite different from the ones living in "free" West.As someone already have said-they are willing to endure lots of difficulties.Russian economy needed such slap in the face as sanctions put at it from "international community" to start real reforms instead to rely on western technology.Russia will be fine-huge mineral resources and lots of talented people living there.Russia is not literally drowning in debt like USA/Japan/UK etc neither is printing money out of think air like again like USA/Japan,a political will is needed to start much needed reforms. And also take care of certain groups into Central Bank/Ministry of Finance etc who openly sabotaging all efforts for reforms.Plenty of information what is really going on in Russia for those who can read Russian language. Those who cant-taking for reality propaganda drivel of Forbes and other "truth" loving western MSM.
Censorship in Russia - only utterly biased people believe such nonsense.I have read more than enough openly anti-Russian pieces in various russian liberal outlets. The very same authors would be in court and facing prison terms if dare to write such things in western media(not they will have the chance of course-CIA made sure long long time ago).
And OP why not dig a bit at ECB site and post here its report how many billions are capital flight from EU?Just to balance things, discuss and people to see for themselves. You will not read about it in free democratic truth-loving west MSM - they have no time for such reality since are very busy twisting reality, spreading lies and propaganda.
