What's new

What kind of local governors do we need in China?

A demonstration during Spring Festival in 2013
In front to the government of Datong and CPC committee of Datong
Those who hate him at first finally change their minds and realise the big picture ahead

Though Mayor Geng continues his journey in another bigger city, the capital of the province of Shanxi, his policies are respected, preserved and being implemented in Datong by the people and his successors. Today, there are numerous renovation projects of ancient relics and redevelopment projects of "urban slums" at every corner of Datong. And he is now the most respected mayor ever in Taiyuan, which is 300km south to Datong.

Policy continuation is indeed an imperative that must be upheld. It is good to see the principles of governance are being continued without any overt attempt to establish one's own self by re-appropriating the idea after scuttling it.

:smitten::smitten: we are lucky to have one of them in the City Of Wuhan !!!
Mr. Ruan, "Manchengwa" (all city digging) is the best CPC secretary of Wuhan ever.
Bad news is his old teammate, the mayor of Wuhan is now in Chengdu City as the CPC secretary, kind of promotion though. (I think Beijing likes Chengdu more :()

I am still watching the new mayor. he seems to be well implementing the previous policies.
This year will witness the inauguration of two subways and one intercity HSR in Wuhan.
I will praise him more if he can nail more high-speed railway projects to Wuhan during the 13th 5-year-plan.
If he can realise Wuhan-Xiamen HSR, I will send him a T-shirt with "Wuhan, different everyday"

And redevelopment of "slums" should be faster!
It's so embarrassing to see those places along the railway!
Bad first impression!!!

And more green!

And we need a new library like the one on the other bank of Yangtze River!

It takes more courage to uphold the policies of long-term vision especially when one is facing immense criticism and controversy. But people will understand at last!

Very interesting, AndrewJin, thanks for the tag!

But about this,
It's so embarrassing to see those places along the railway!
It's the same the world, over my friend.
Of course, only ragged people live by railways if at all avoidable.

Maybe just making the place pimpy and fresh with renovations?
New clothes for the poor as for the emperor, don't hide your poor
dress 'em up, that kind of thing.

Yeah, city surrounds by train are almost always depressing sights.

Great day to you, Tay.

Of course.

But nearly all cities in China have undergone massive redevelopment of regions along railways, poor people living along the railways have much better housing thereafter....

In Wuhan, we do have some quite successful projects.

One of the railway stations has much better surrounding now!

And railways in downtown are being elevated, schools and new housing are being built.

BUT, they are building more floors on the top for more compensation!
People become millionaires overnight at the expense of taxpayers!

On Wuhan's iconic Yellow Crane Tower, such terrible slums are being viewed by tourists around the world every single day.
You know what, after decades of inaction, now we finally have a mayor which wants to do something, but the compensation is way too expensive.....And it's getting more and more unaffordable every day!

You need a shady spot for the tourists to get lost in and scared to death.
T'makes for great stories once back home?

The houses on the next to last photo are fine, behind the China railways boxcars.
Nothing pretty but neither filthy nor crumbling, grade A slums compared to center
town Detroit for many years.

All the best to you and yours, Tay.

Demolished 200,000 homes and relocated 500,000 people to new homes in a span of 5 years! This astounding feat can happen nowhere in the world but in China.

In light of Chinese developing model, Development and Democracy are increasingly becoming a pair of antonyms for developing countries, and "democracy" has become a versatile excuse of all sorts of inaction and incompetence.

Many in "the biggest democracy" are still indulged in the fairy tall of "The Tortoise and The Hare“, but the problem is that the tortoise is busy chasing its own tail, and the hare never blinks. They may want to rethink just exactly what their much cherished "freedom" has done for their hundreds million poor.

tortoise is busy chasing its own tail
For every country, the priority is to find a method best suitable for them, as opposed to merely copying a method.
Is China Method appropriate to another country?
No, you can learn but should never copy.

If this is the best way for Datong and Wuhan, do it....

Taiyuan City, where Mayor Geng is now working as the CPC secretory
