Okay here is breakdown of the conflict in 1991 the USSR broke up , you have to understand the USSR as a country was made up of these ethnic republics mostly in the Baltics, the Caucusus region, Central Asia and the Far East, this was the Soviet appeasement to the minority groups however from Stalin to Khrushchev there was massive encouragement of Russian migration to these ethnic republics a throwback policy from the Czar era basically when the USSR broke up in 1991 all the Baltic Republics(Lituhania,Estonia, Latvia,Belarus(Slavic actually) and Ukraine(Slavic actually), Caucusus(Azerbaijan,Armenia,Georgia) and Central Asia(Uzbekistan,Kyrgz Republic,Kazakhstan, Turkemenistan, and Tajikstan) all declared independence from the USSR,Chechens wanted to seperate as well but Russia saw this as threat the Caucusus is located just like Central Asia is in the cross roads of Europe and Asia so if Russia lost this the biggest benefit would have gone to Uncle Sam or Turkey at that time Russia has a base in Gymuri,Armenia so loss of that would mean Russia would be gone from the region.Now before someone goes on and says ogagaga bogagaga at least Russia is going against Izalamists and shiett has to understand the complicated history of the region, Chechens have hated Russians and Slavs for a while heck even when the Chechens were pagans Russians and Slavs were hated all through out the Caucusus region, Chechens became Muslim around hundreds of years ago so this breaks the arguement also in the 90s Dzhokar Dudayev was President of Chehcnya he was former Soviet General and he fought against not just the Russians but the extreme folks that would turn Chencnya into the wahhabi s...thole it is today
