As voice-recognition and personal assistant features such as Siri become more common on smartphones, I can't help but wonder: Would any of us ever be able to handle real and brutally honest conversations with our mobile devices?
Out of all the items we surround ourselves with over the course of a day, our phones are the ones which spend the most time in our presence. They see our shameful acts, they know our darkest secrets and they overhear our most vulnerably moments.
So what if after your next text message exchange with a romantic interest you were to sigh, mutter "what am I doing," and suddenly hear your phone chime in with a response? Would you want to hear what it has to say? Keep in mind that it would know how often you began typing a text message asking for a proper date only to delete it, it would know what you said when you told your friend about this amazing guy or girl, and it would even know that you already researched the perfect date spots.
Scary? Now take things a step further. Consider having your phone interject suggestions and judgement calls whenever you try to do something.
"Are you sure you want to call your ex again?"
"Oh. You're looking up the local pizza place's menu? Why don't you cook a healthy meal instead?"
"It's been half an hour since you read that email from your boss. Shouldn't you reply to it?"
To see just how challenging dealing with an attitude-ridden and brutally honest phone could be, take a look at this hilarious parody of a Siri commercial. (Be careful though the video contains some inappropriate language which is not safe for work, or young ears.)
Now aren't you suddenly glad that your smartphone is actually kinda dumb?
