Ít nhất hai hình ảnh được chụp từ trực thăng hoặc thiết bị bay không người lái của USS Gabrielle Giffords cho thấy có vẻ như tàu tuần tra của Việt Nam đã bám đuổi tàu Trung Quốc trước khi tàu Mỹ xuất hiện.

Dựa trên vệt nước trên mặt biển, USS Gabrielle Giffords dường như đã tăng tốc và cắt ngang đội hình của tàu Trung Quốc trước khi so kè với tàu Hải Dương 4. Một hình ảnh khác cho thấy tàu hộ vệ tên lửa của hải quân Trung Quốc đã di chuyển sau hành động của tàu Mỹ.

Dữ liệu hàng hải trên trang Marine Traffic cho thấy tàu khảo sát của Trung Quốc đã chuyển hướng khỏi khu vực và tăng tốc về phía bắc chỉ một ngày sau vụ việc.

Bộ Ngoại giao Trung Quốc và Bộ Quốc phòng Trung Quốc chưa đưa ra bình luận.

Đây không phải là lần đầu tiên tàu khảo sát Trung Quốc tiến xuống Biển Đông. Giới học giả nhận định không chỉ khảo sát dầu khí, các tàu khảo sát Trung Quốc còn tranh thủ vẽ bản đồ đáy biển cho tàu ngầm hoạt động.


Một số thông tin trên báo quốc tế nói Hải Dương 4 đã xâm phạm vùng đặc quyền kinh tế của Việt Nam.

Tại cuộc họp báo thường kỳ chiều 2-7, khi được hỏi về hoạt động của tàu Hải Dương 4 của Trung Quốc trên Biển Đông, người phát ngôn Bộ Ngoại giao Việt Nam Lê Thị Thu Hằng nhấn mạnh: "Chúng tôi cho rằng các hoạt động thăm dò, khảo sát phải có sự đồng ý của Việt Nam, phù hợp công ước Liên Hiệp Quốc về Luật biển 1982 (UNCLOS 1982).
