What do you think about China (Your standpoint)?

According to the Wall Street Journal, there were 180,000 protests in China in one single year.

Unrest on Rise as China Booms - WSJ.com

Yet according to the Indian members here, Chinese aren't even allowed to protest? So why do we have so many protests if we are not allowed to protest?

@acetophenol, you should visit China yourself one day. Then you will see first hand what is exaggerated and what is not.

The one-child policy was just gotten rid of, partly because it was becoming so unpopular. Didn't you hear the news? It was all over this forum.

Now it's more of a two-child policy. Though you can have more if you are willing to pay the fine.
Yeah sure,I would like to visit china one day. I am not saying that you can't protest. See even the child policy was gotten rid of recently, that too converted to 2 child policy. In India, the freedom of speech and expression that we enjoy is that we can't even imagine about the govt coming up something like it in the first place.

I'm confused. I saw a documentary that showed Dalits being attacked for walking 10 feet in front of a higher caste person? What about all those people arrested for "liking" communal posts on Facebook?

So why is it that Hong Kong ranks #2 best in Asia on the Press Freedom Index, and India is not even in the top 100?

I think it's wrong for India to assume some sort of "air of superiority" over China on these terms. We are both developing countries, and there are plenty of people who are downtrodden in both.

To say one is a "golden cage" and another is a "free slum" is massively over-simplifying the issue, in my opinion.

some indians here talked about their democracy, human rights, freedom. but in reality, they discriminate the dalits in their country very much. I believe most of the high caste indians here dont want to be touched by dalits. this is their superiority over china. big joke.

Guys, there is lot of censoring, monitoring and some restrictions. Media is more n less a propaganda tool and often used to form an opinion.

But to normal people there is no visible impact on their lives.

Dalits issue-yep ,sh!t happens. We had a time in India, when the so called "high caste" literally ruled over the low caste and no one gave a damn. Now its changed, they get their assses kicked. BTW, my questions were directed at the life at mainland china rather than HK.
Also whats the general view and your personal view about Indo-China relations.

It's not true and not completely false. The truth lies somewhere in between.. these are becoming rare sights with passage of time and soon will be part of the history (we are not proud of) only.

What do I think :-

1) A nation with people nationalistic enough to stand for their own nation's interest.
2) A confident population regardless of propoganda or not.
3) Proud of their own culture.
4) Arrogant current day youth but the older generation was (is) still a lot more humble.
5) Doers than talkers (see how they impressed the world during the B'jing Olympics and later , sending man in space).
6) An acumen for making money - greatest risk takers / business savvy. On par with Jews !
7) Chinese women are empowered. Almost equal to their male peers.
8) Boastful CCP line with a tendency to lecture small-wigs like the Chief Exec. of HK.
9) Greatest ARRAY of chinese cuisine in the whole world.
10) Diplomacy that is cunning, but at the same time, CONFIDENT about telling on the face what is theirs as theirs. Backtracking on diplomatic front is almost nil.

That was amazing though, when Hu Jintao flew down to publicly scold that idiot Tung Chee Hwa, and after that Tung Chee Hwa had to resign as HK Chief Executive.

Everyone in HK hated Tung Chee Hwa at that time. Many still do. Hu Jintao has always been a lot more popular due to his more reserved and humble style.

great country allied with a snake...no offense.

Jealous butt hurt Indian.

On topic.

China is said to be a sleeping dragon. I interpret it as people with potential, who did not expand beyond their territory, but kept their empires within their region.

It is said not to provoke the dragon , means not to provoke Chinese, that they start expanding their rule/empire beyond their territory.

Though the age of empires is thing of the past, so, I am not sure if they would do that now, in the recent future.
