What according to you guys, can be done to change the Army to become non political. That no matter, if the politicians are corrupt, the Army does not see its moral duty to step in, thereby assuring unquestioned civilian supremacy.
This thread is not about saying that Pakistan cannot survive, if the Army stops intervening, but about understanding what can be done to change the Army's(more specifically the commanders, generals and COAS's) mindset.
It is my view, that the first crop of politicians might be corrupt, but given time and a few generations, the politicians will eventually mature, as as happened in most countries of the world. That is IF, it is the politicians who run the country. They who control and fight for votes, eventually, their accountability to the voter matters.
I am giving very specific examples of India, just to put across my POV, though i donot mean to put India in this thread AT ALL. And i will appreciate if others dont.
Like how after years and years of corrupt politician rule in India, finally, it is development that matters most in election time. You might not believe it, but things like China, Pakistan, UN, etc, etc which were the staple diet of previous generation of politicians has been COMPLETELY changed. The new focus is, who has developed the country and city more.
Shiela Dikshit, the CM of Delhi, has been elected TWICE now, on the ONLY plank of development. Narendra Modi, as hideous and disgusting as that man might be, has been reelected, because under him, Gujarat has become a major industrial state of India with the highest output. Most Automobile LSM, etc is headed towards Gujarat. He alone has single handedly transformed Gujarat, and that is the SOLE reason he got elected again. Because of the development criteria. It can be said, that a negative point has become such that even mass muder can be legalized(as in case of Modi), if the man can make the state start developing FAST.
The most Blatant example, Lalu Prasad Yadav, one of THE most corrupt politicians of India, ex CM of Bihar(the MOST corrupt and lawless state in India, consistently ranks as one of the bottom states of India in every survey done), who ruled Bihar for OVER 14 years, got kicked out for the FIRST time, because his challenger, Nitish, made his political moto the development plank. He said that Bihar was the most under developed, under 14 years of Lalu's rule, he would change it.
Lalu became the Union Railways Minister of India when Congress came to power this time.
Surprise of surprise, Lalu, for the first in the upcomming elections of Bihar is promising development if he gets elected, the way he says he transformed the Indian Railways(which indeed has been consistently posting handsome profits for the past few years, which is a first, as it was always in loss!).
This is just to emphasize, that after ALL the years since independence, when all politicians of India either harped on aminosity of Pakistan, or China or whatever other reason, all of them without exception have started to focus on development and started delivering for political survival, and it is for this reason, that you see India developing. It is the individual efforts at state level as well as the national level because the national psyche has become such. Again i point out, that Indian political system has MANY MANY flaws, and I just want to point out a specific genre of examples.
So comming back to my point, the same would happen in Pakistan, if given time, if the Army does not keep on intervening. What can be done to change that, how to make the Army completely subservient to the civilian leadership.
