Westerners have put us into the danger: PM’s energy advisor

Energy independence is a Trumpian slogan!

It’s nonsense!

The world is interdependent.

We should focus on things we do best and import things we cannot.

Aim is to make more money than we spend.

Let nonsensical terms like “energy independence” to trumpian idiots.
We will have to agree to disagree here. Without cheap and constant supply of energy you can not do much. We will face the ravages of periodic high fuel bills like we are seeing now if we remain price takers forever.

Cheap and constant supply lol

That magic is only available to Russia and the Arabs.

Rest of the planet just has to learn to use energy efficiently.

Just spouting wishful thoughts doesn’t make things real.

Actually he does have a point.

BD should look to build as much energy independence as possible without relying on massive imports of oil and gas.

Not only can these sources of fuel be expensive but supply cannot always be guaranteed.

It is doing the right thing by basing it's future energy needs around nuclear, coal and hydroelectric power(Nepal/Bhutan via India).

Without (relatively) cheap and plentiful power, it's economic growth will stutter.

I want BD to generate 80% of electricity through nuclear power.

But that is not cheap or independent. Because BD doesn’t have nuclear technology.

But it’s better than fossil fuels controlled by bloody Arabs!

We need to ensure energy is used efficiently.

E.g. no US style waste like leaving appliances on standby or using high wattage light bulbs.

You are relatively independent when you have the basics of operating the nuclear plant.

More complex maintenance will come over time and they need only be refuelled every 2 years.

BD has just started on the decades long plan to eventually one day hopefully design and build its own nuclear power plants.

No not really.... you just have to plan ahead, buy futures at the correct time and diversify your energy sources.

It is neither rocket science nor wishful thinking.

What is just silly is to want 80% of your energy requirement from Nuclear power that carries immense risk for a densely populated geographically small country but you wont take a risk to explore potential hydrocarbon deposit on the bay.

BD needs a diversified set of energy suppliers to balance risk, guarantee supply and not be a permanent price taker. It should be a mix of hydro carbon, nuclear and renewable.

Russia is the best source of nuclear technology for a country like BD as they have excellent and safe designs but around 20% cheaper as opposed to that from Europe/USA and the Far East. Not sure about China as that may also be similar in price and technology now.

BD already has had a small research reactor since the 1980s and Roopur will give engineers in BD the first operational experience of a nuclear power plant.

BD'shis will learn so much about nuclear technology just from operating and eventually partially maintaining the plant.

Hasina did not just choose nuclear for power generation but also to build up expertise in this strategic sector - that is something the naysayers could never comprehend in their opposition to this critical power technology to arrive in BD.

If possible, I would like BD to partner with Russia for another Gen 3+ VVER-1200 plant ready for operation by 2030, but this time with 4 x 1.2GW reactors.

Agreed but Bapex has capacity issues. We need very aggrassive exploration. I support competitive foreign explorer working side by side with Bapex onshore.

Offahore is also not possible for Bapex with their current capacity. We need to build up private companies from Bangladesh, evwn join venture with governement will help our local companies to be able to go big soon.

Aging North Sea fields and few new discoveries became a problem for Norway in the mid 2000s. Number of exploratiin well were also decreasing with every year.

The solution?

Norwegian government inteoduced a bill where all exploration companies will be refunded the cost of exploration, even if there well is proven dry.

The result was a massive boom in new exploration with several new discoveries.

Norway has huge sovereign wealth fund.

They can afford the risk.

now enjoy 115 taka per dollar soon it will be 200. BD is no different then sri lanka or pak. at least sri lanka and pak has many highways and nicer airports etc.
A few years ago, Hasina Bibi was telling us she would build airports in many villages and mahallas of the country and the biggest one would be built in her Gopalganj.

Now, the country will have little money to do repairing those roads that Hasina Bibi has built by borrowing money from others.

Idiot!!! The Hardinge Bridge was built by the British 100 years before. Now, tell me which Steel Truss Bridge your engineers built by themselves since then?

You know the answer. Not a single one was done by local engineers.

Yet, you talk BD physicists to build and export nuclear power stations. I ask you to manufacture HTB and HSB used to fasten the bridge structural members. Can you tell what is the meaning of TORQUE? If not, better you don't talk about nuclear physics.

This is the future (together with some wind and a lot of Nuclear PP).

MYMENSINGH, Nov 03: Despite delay for the coronavirus pandemic, construction work of the Sutiakhali 50 MW solar power plant on the bank of the Brahmaputra River in Mymensingh has finally been completed.

Solar power generation from the project on an experimental basis will start at the end of this month, said Group Captain (Retd) Sheikh Mohammad, director, HDFC Sinpower Limited.

"I hope, soon, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will officially inaugurate operation of the plant," he added.

With the solar power plant going into operation, another 50 MW electricity will be added to the national grid, sources said.
HDFC Sinpower Limited is implementing the project in a joint venture of Bangladesh, Malaysia and Singapore in Sutiakhali of Mymensingh with the aim of generating renewable energy, especially environmentally-friendly solar power, under the Seventh Five Year Plan of the government.

Under the supervision of an executive engineer of PDB with private investment and government supervision, work on the state-of-the-art eco-friendly solar power plant at a cost of Tk 800 crore on 174 acres of land in Sutiakhali in Mymensingh's Gauripur upazila has been completed.

Although the project work started in 2014 as per documents, after many ups and downs, after the signing of 'Implementation Agreement' with the Ministry of Power and Energy at the end of 2016 and 'Power Purchase Agreement' with the Power Development Board, implementation work of the 'Sutiakhali 50 MW Solar Power Project' started in 2017.

Production was supposed to start by June 30 after extending the project.

But after the Chinese engineers involved in the project returned to the country on New Year's holiday, they could not return on time due to the coronavirus pandemic, delaying installation and connection of the solar plates.

In addition, some local people and political leaders allegedly raised obstruction about the project work for their own interests.
As a result of the prompt intervention of the district administration and law and order forces, it was possible to complete the work quickly by overcoming all the obstacles.

Project Director and PDB Executive Engineer Indrajit Debnath said, "The project already includes construction of an office building, Brahmaputra river governance dam, barbed wire fence, installation of solar plates over an area of one sq km, connection of ten box transmission, construction of 132 kV transmission line with sub-station and 132 kV transmission line.

The work of laying four kilometers of underground cable up to the line and one kilometer of overhead transmission line has been completed. Now, after equipment testing and commissioning, experimental solar power generation will start and 50 MW of electricity will be added to the grid."

HDFC Sinpower Limited Director Group Captain (Retd.) Sheikh Mohammad Shafiqul Islam PSC said work of the project has been implemented following all the regulations of the government.

It is the largest project among the ongoing solar power projects in the country.

He hoped that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would inaugurate the project now as the work has been completed within the extended time given by the government, saying the project would be a milestone in solar power generation.

There is a 20 Megawatt project in Teknaf too, along with many other smaller project.

There is a 20 Megawatt project in Teknaf too, along with many other smaller project.

Renewable energy is becoming the main source of power throughout the world. Without renewable energy, the Earth will die out very fast as we are already seeing this year.

Japan at 38 degrees C, England at 41 degrees, and Spain at 47 degrees. Unthinkable. In the case of Europe/ England, One Japanese was telling me a research report about the additional heat produced in the Sahara desert.

Usually, the heated air from the Sahara moves north towards Europe. In a usual year, the hot air passing over the Mediterranean vaporizes the seawater forming clouds that move north and causes rainfall there reducing the temperature.

The Japanese said that this year the hot air moved further up the sky creating smaller clouds and with lesser rain in Europe. I am not sure about this theory but entire Europe was hotter this year.

Aziz Khan said foreign oil companies will not be interested to invest in gas exploration until they have been given the option for gas export.

He said many local companies could be interested to invest in exploration if there is change in the policy.
So, the present price hike of oil and power is because of BAL govt's inactivity on gas exploration in the BoB. Our people want international companies to explore and invest hundreds of millions of dollars only to see they cannot export because our govt wants them not to.

If we believe in the capitalist system, we must follow the capitalist rules. We should not expect multinationals to invest but cannot take back their profits.

I have not heard of any oil /gas exploration bidding for the last few years. No wonder. Because the oil companies are not willing to grease the palms of Hasina Bibi and her cronies.
