SEOUL, September 23 (Itar-Tass) — Washington and Seoul have reached a preliminary agreement to increase the range of South Korean ballistic missiles to 800 kilometres, informed sources reported on Sunday.

The agreement permits South Korea to increase the range of developing ballistic missiles from the current 300 to 800 kilometres, thus enabling it to hit main goals in almost the entire territory of the DPRK. At the same time, the permission for weight of warheads will remain unchanged at 500 kilograms. Thus, the longer-range ballistic missiles will be able to "cover" the entire territory of North Korea if they are launched from the area South Korean city of Daejeon.

On the background of North Korea's development of missile arsenal, official Seoul twice - in 1979 and 2001 - tried to revise its missile pact with the United States. Now, North Korean missiles are able to hit anywhere in the South, the Yonhap news agency notes in this regard.

An official announcement of the new agreement on missile weapons between the United States and the Republic of Korea is due in October of the current year, where defence ministers of the two allied countries will have an annual meeting.

Seoul need approval from US to increase its missile' ranges

MTCR my friend, MTCR. South Korea uses US-made missiles and therefore it cannot increase their range just like that.

China became a part of the treaty very late when it had already transferred missile technology to you and other such countries while US and Russia are already members since long ago. If Chinese had been signatory of MTCR earlier, they'd also be bound not to transfer tech beyond 300 Km to you.

Why do you think we can't increase the range of BrahMos missiles beyond 300 Km (at least under BrahMos banner)? Because BrahMos Aerospace is a semi-international company that has involvement of a signatory of the MTCR aka Russia who is bound by its signature.

However, this act of US will now make MTCR irrelevant as other signatories will raise their voice.

It is good in a way for us as we may be cleared to increase BrahMos' range from 300 Km to 2,000 Km. :D

Thank you Korea! You just made our day.

China is not a part of the MTCR, it does follow(for the most part) the earlier guidelines, however its not bound to and its actions are completely unilateral. as such any chinese missiles sold greater than 300km is perfectly normal and legal.

Well that is because you don't have a regard for any commonly agreed upon rule no matter how significant or otherwise your co-signatories are. After all, deception is the key word you use.

But there is no honor in that.

As far as the US is concern, she doesn't care where South Korea can hit China. The reason she limits SK's range because her other more favorite child (Japan) is close by and she know who SK hates the most in this world.

Well that is rapidly changing into another country that US may not like at all.

Sad and pathetic that South Korea needs approval from the US to increase it's missile range.

Maybe South Korea should ditch the US and go with Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Central Asia, China, Russia.

Atleast we would give South Korea an independent Foreign Policy. Instead of taking dictates from USA.

And if those countries tell South Korea they need permission from them first because its using their missiles will SK come back to U.S.?

I think you don't know,According to the treaty, once in the war,Korea'army is not commanded by their government ,but USA

South Korea's foreign trade with China=USA+japan

and South Korea has not independent right of belligerency, when at war, all South Korea army should ordered by USFK

MTCR my friend, MTCR.
It has nothing to do with MTCR.

The US doesn't sell what Korea needs.

Both Beijing and Tokyo are now within range of the ROK ballistic missiles.

Sad and pathetic that South Korea needs approval from the US to increase it's missile range.
If the US doesn't agree, Korea then has no place to test its ballistic missiles. Unlike cruise missiles that can circle around to simulate a long range flight, ballistic missiles can't. Only the US missile test range is available to Korea for such purpose, and Korea would have to search for an alternate test site(Russia?) if Korea decided to tear up the agreement.

From 2015 and onward, it's the ROK Defense Ministry that commands US troops in Korea during wartime.

South Korea's foreign trade with China=USA+japan
Yet the ROK ballistic missiles can now strike Beijing.

So what if Beijing is in range. What do you want to say ?
Seoul's ability to strike Beijing with 5,000 ballistic and cruise missiles, originally intended for North Korea, limit China's options in use of military forces in unexpected events.

Seoul has been in range of Chinese missile's for decades
And now Beijing is within range of ROK missiles, both ballistic and cruise.

and China has nuclear weapons.
Nuke option is out as China gets nuked for using nukes.

Except Beijing is 930 km away from Seoul, genius.
