This is fuzzy and there is no clear answer.

Was China colonised by foreign power in recent centuries?

Please explain.

.
Nope.

But have in the past temporarily ceded territories to foreign powers like hongkong n macau.

Mongol n manchus hhmm not sure if these 2 fits anywhere as they were assimilated.

Nothing the likes of Commonwealth countries.

Yeah, Japan got pretty large portions of eastern China, and the UK did control Hong Kong for quite a bit.

The Mongols also conquered China, but they assimilated into it rather quickly so that doesn't really count.

Tamerlane was also set to conquer China, but he became ill and died so the invasion never happened.

Only Hong Kong and Macau were colonized. Japan never colonized China. They invaded during world war 2, but were defeated by the allies and eventually withdrawed their military from China.

Mongolia colonised China in 1279, so I wouldn't count that as a recent century.

In China we don't really term Mongols as foreign, most Mongols live in China and are Chinese citizens, less of them live in the newly indenpent Republic of Mongolia which still be regarded as part of China by ROC. As for Japan, China and Japan fought a war on the land of barely one third of China for eight years and won, it's not a colonization.

That's where most Mongol people live today.Inner Mongolia, whose GDP is 28 times of Outer Mongolia

Japan never colonized China. To said Japan colonized China is like saying Nazi Germany colonized USSR. This is just foolish.

An example of complete colonization would be Britain colonized India. I’m not sure if that is correct either as Britain created India, but colonized Indian subcontinent.

India never existed for Britain to conquered.

Alright then, conquered. Happy?

No Japan failed to conquer China. They got blogged down. China was too big. China withdrew inland and continued to fight from the wartime Capitol of ChungQing.
Actually there was little doubt in most Chinese that they would eventually defect Japan..
Even in Malaysia Chinese fought the Japanese from the jungle. Their brutality do not scare us.

They still held large portions of China for a fair bit of time.

They occupied the major cities on the coast. Yes.
China was in the midst of a civil war when Japan attack.
Japan was "looting a burning house".
Japan under estimate the resolve of the Chinese people.
Read how the Chinese dismantle factories and transport them to ChungQing. Read how the Chinese build the Burma road to supply the war against Japan.
