War of Independence 1857 was almost won?

It is commonly propagated that war of independence was a losing cause and there was no chance of winning, but recently i have read some sources which state that as a matter of fact war of independence 1857 was nearly won by the indian subcontinent people which came really as surprise to me since we are usually taught that war of independence was a losing cause and there was no chance of winning it.

The same model, the Imperial Civil Service, was implemented in British India from 1858, after the demise of the East India Company's rule in India through the Indian Rebellion of 1857 which came close to toppling British rule in the country.[15]
