i dont know, it wont be the first time that buying from abroad would be cheaper than building it inhouse.
The question is that if there is renewed demand for transport vehicles in Pakistan, why cant govt give incentives to manufacture and even export these vehicles from Pakistan?
By itself, the demand for buses wont be so high as to manufacture them here, but if allowed export, that will change the dynamics of industry.
The govt is in 4th year and still no auto policy. At the same time, look at the efficiency and non transparency in building the metro train in Lahore!
Isnt Volvo commercial vehicle owned by some Chinese company? So if the bus has to be imported, why cant we import from China?
There is a ban of import from India. I agree with it but at the same time while the ban is there, Pakistan instead of being lazy should make the auto industry competitive. I can bet Pakistani industry and govt will be lazy and eventually will lift the ban on imports from India. Pakistani auto industry in incompetitive anyways and there is no chance the trend will reverse if no new competition is encouraged.
We are not building in-house, my point is that when we already have cheaper source (Korea) than why we should spend more Forex on comparable buses from Volvo - i mean what is benefit for Pakistan in it?
As usual we have already missed the boat, Pakistan's domestic demand is not enough to invest on manufacturing facility and regarding exports we will not be able to compete as India & China can produce at much less cost because of mature Industry.
