Strong U.S., China demand boosts VW sales
The Detroit News
Rising demand in the United States and emerging markets propelled sales of Volkswagen AG's VW-brand passenger cars 12.5 percent higher in the first seven months of 2011 to 2.95 million vehicles.

The brand gained momentum in July, with sales rising 17.2 percent to 419,000 vehicles, the German automaker said Tuesday.

"The Volkswagen brand has made a good start to the second half of the year," said VW's global sales chief Christian Klingler. He attributed the sales gains to the freshness of the VW model range, which includes a new VW Jetta compact.

VW-brand sales in Europe rose 8.1 percent to 1.02 million vehicles in the January to July period. In Germany, they were up 8.5 percent; they rose 2.8 percent in the rest of western Europe, while sales in central and eastern Europe surged 44 percent. In Russia, sales more than doubled.

Deliveries in North America rose 22 percent to 280,900 vehicles in the seven months through July. They were up 7.5 percent in South America at 444,100 units.

VW-brand sales in the Asia-Pacific region rose 15.9 percent to 1.1 million vehicles. China, VW's biggest single market, accounted for sales of 991,000 vehicles in the first seven months of 2011, a 22 percent rise over last year.

VW is the biggest brand in the Wolfsburg, Germany-based Volkswagen group, which also sells vehicles under the Skoda, Audi, Bentley and other brands.
