I have a very good sikh friend who is very religious and devout. One day when discussing something we hit up on the khalistan issue. He said that he was saddened that so many innocent people had been killed and how the sacred golden temple became a battleground. I asked him on his opinion of the state of affairs at that time. This was his reply
"It was a terrible thing, but the traitors had to be killed. I just wish so many innocents didn't get hurt."
And he is not even an indian citizen. he is a citizen of botswana. yet he always uses the term 'us indians', never 'you indians'.
Understand this. Most Sikhs are very patriotic (i would actually say the most patriotic group in India, if you look at their representation in the armed forces). They have put the Khalistan issue behind them. They do feel bad about the innocents who were killed, just like the rest of the country. But that doesn't mean they want a separate state. Those who want separate state are a small minority living abroad. The Khalistan movement might not be dead, but it is getting there.
And for anyone wishing to harp on about Khalistan, go to Punjab and start a speech on freedom from India. The police will have to interfere. Not to arrest the speaker, but to save him from the locals!
