The Indian Armed Forces (IAF) will soon have a number of virtual, reality-based para training simulators, expected to boost their training, especially of the special forces. And Bangalore will play a pivotal role in providing the forces with the simulator being produced at the 515 Army workshop, near Ulsoor here.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, sources said:?“The 515 acquired the technology from the Army’s Simulator Development Division (SDD), Secunderabad. The process of manufacturing has already begun.”

Post-induction, armed forces personnel/trainees will be suspended by a harness and wear virtual, reality goggles to practise jumps in a range of realistic environments.

The simulator will provide a trainee the visualisation of himself/herself standing at the exit of the aircraft, and lets him/her to respond to the various commands given inside the aircraft such as count drill, yellow on and exit on green.

“A realistic exit and depiction of deployment of the parachute after four seconds will also be simulated,” the source said. Further, the instructor will be able to view what the trainee sees-through his/her goggles on screens along with an overall picture of the individual or group’s descent.

A retired Air Force officer said that the simulator will bridge the gap between what cadets do during a live-jump and in the hanger. “If the technology is up-to-date, having seen some of them abroad, I can tell you that we will be doing what we do during real exercises, except that lives of cadets will not be lost during the training,” he said.
Sources said that this will help trainees get familiar with the correct drills to a level previously only achieved by jumping from an aircraft; one can also be tested on their abilities.

The simulator will be equipped to simulate emergency procedures, and will be the highlight as the cadet can deal with a range of situations, while the instructors will be allowed to improvise and replicate live descents and so on.

The nodal agency for design and development of simulators for Army, SDD was established in 1991 and has made long strides in the development of training simulators since inception. Among other simulators that the 515 Workshop is manufacturing is the Anti-Tank Guided Missile (ATGM)?simulator with effective virtual simulation for day and night engagement.
