The Pakistan Army, led by then the Islami Chhatra Sangha leader Kamaruzzaman with his Al-Badr and Razakar militia henchmen, had surrounded the village at Sherpur’s Nalitabarhi on Jun 25.
It came to be known as ‘the village of widows’ after the fateful morning during Bangladesh’s Liberation War.
They killed 120 men and raped the women.
“I am thankful to Allah because I lived to see justice being served,” said Hafiza Bewa, 65, whose husband ‘Ibrahim’ was killed.
She along with widows Kurfuli Bewa, 75, and Hasen Banu, 70, had testified for the prosecution at the International Crimes Tribunal.
Jabeda Bewa, 65, Samla Bewa, 62, and Asia Bewa, 75, were raped and their husbands killed.
They, too, have expressed relief at seeing Kamaruzzaman hang.
Jamaat-e-Islami senior assistant secretary general Kamaruzzaman, convicted of crimes against humanity, was hanged by the neck at Dhaka Central Jail at10:01pm on Saturday.
He was handed death for planning and leading genocide in Shohaghpur which widowed 64 women.
Thirty-two among them have died, while others are surviving on meagre allowances from the government and different organisations.
They demanded that the government increase their allowance and provide security.
