Oh interesting, do you work in sourcing, factory agent per chance?

I usually go to Fu-yuan industrial village, Huang Jiang town, Dongguan.
Im a electronic engineer, sometimes i need to go DongGuan OEM factory for PE / FAQ support, rest time i stay in office to watch circuit schematic or write C codes into microprocessor ... i ever worked in FOXCONN and ZTE so has some experineces in manufacturing field. I ever went to the factory in ChangAn town of DongGuan city, recently the production line moved to HuiZhou city.

BTW @Carlosa What's ur job in DongGuan ?

Shenzhen...a desert of culture. lol
90% citizens r from other provinces, local ppl very few or immigrant. ShenZhen is a big immigration city, not Cantonese. Chinese come from all corners of the country to ShenZhen, fight for their own dreams in here.

ShenZhen is a rich & special city in China.

Wow, I'm also an electronics engineer, but I left the profession 20 years ago.

I go to factories in that area to get some product done for me, sculptures, western and Buddhist type like Buddha and Kuan-Yin statues, etc for export to Europe and USA.

Pho 1 US dollar on average? I have been there in 2012, come on! In 2012 pho in Hanoi was pricier than 6-yuan rice noodle in Nanning in 2012.
Rice noodle in my city, biggest city in central China which has higher prices than Nanning, is 4yuan($0.65) without meat, 8-15yuan ($1.3-2.4) with different amount of beef (10 yuan/$1.6 has similar beef quantity as in average beef pho of Hanoi back in 2012).

The same here in Wuhan.
Even in Shanghai and Beijing, Lanzhou Beef Noddle is just 8-10 yuan ($1.3-1.6).

I thought I would have some real cheap stuff in Vietnam, but it turned out everything was not cheap given the gap of incomes. That was in 2012. the price of rice noodle in Hanoi( in Saigon even more expensive) even for Today, I think is still pricy. You know Wuhan's most famous breakfast hot dry noodle has been double priced from 2 yuan a couple of years ago to now 4 yuan ($0.65) on average.
it is mistake if you use country income measure living standards. Consider income is not accurate number to measure wealth there are many factors are not accurate to calculate gdp, this is economic 101 and everyone knows that. In Saigon Vietnam most small and medium business knows how to avoid taxes, people work for small and medium business dont pay tax. They dont use credit card, they take cash most, there is no way to know each family earn.
Saigon properties as expensive as Tokyo. The same beef noddle if you buy in district 1 is almost the same price as in U.S. Little less

China on another hand most living under pay. That means most money go to government Thats how China has massive money to fund for infrastructure. Reality chinese income less than the number government posted, not consider theres propagranda from china government when they post gdp.

Look at Cars in vietnam, the same car if you buy in U.S with 100% less. Which means a car cost $13k in U.S will cost $26k in Vietnam. In Vietnam wealth does nit distribute evently.

I just compared beef noodle price and train ticket price judging from my own experiences in Vietnam and once again a Vietnamese wanna use his own very limited and false knowledge to make nonsensical assumptions. Seriously? Saigon properties as expensive as Tokyo? @Nihonjin1051 . I did try pho in district 1 of Saigon in 2012, little less???COME ON!!
btw, i think it's better to observe people's life in one's own eyes rather than receive biased information from propaganda. I had my own observation in Vietnam's biggest two cities and Nha Trang.

anyone from wuxi here? how is the food? I have a project and may need to travel to there.
Wuxi, frankly speaking, its food is a little bit too sweet. It's only 10-20 min to Suzhou and 30-50 min to Shanghai by HSR, which I think provide better food. Local cuisine in Yangtze delta is generally sweet, but in Shanghai it's possible to try different schools of food across China. Reformed Sichuanese food ( less spicy to meet locals' taste) is perhaps the most popular one.:-)

I don't know why many crazy for Pho, ... LOL
we have been using Pho everyday as breakfast, lunch or dinner.
So we consider it just like any fast food.
There're Pho 1.20 ; 2.5 ; 50 dollars... but average 1.50-1.70 in Vietnam

On topic, this is a disappointed thing to keep narrow, single track and improve the speed to 80-90 kmph until 2020. ( current speed about 50 kmph )

We expect, the wider, double track with speed at least 120-150 kmph to be done not later than 2020, even with social labours.

Pho is very popular in the west. When I traveled in Vietnam I had Pho for most meals and the only Chinese food I had in Vietnam was in Saigon, one Chinese restaurant near that church in Chinese district where PM? of South Vietnam prayed before being murdered. 3 very basic dishes there cost me $25, I wanna cry at that time!
But guesthouses and budge hostels were reasonably priced in Vietnam, mostly $15-25 per night. Just transportation prices were not cheap at all, like the train ticket of reunification express and taxi in Nha Trang. I guess it was because Nha Trang is a tourist city?

Haha, you know where Ngo Dinh Diem murdered ?
You were charged at Chinese restaurant in Saigon ?

Saigon is the only city in Vietnam has Chinatown. So Chinese community is a part of Saigon.
The church you refered is Nha Tho Cha Tam, in Chinatown area which is location for Chinese community ( we call it Cho Lon area). Most of residents there are Chinese ethnic. If you take a look at tourguideline like foodie dot com, tripadvisor ..., maybe you could have better choice. That's why we should study in prior the trip, for saving our money.

Your points are quite exact.
1. Room rates are very good
2. Transport is quite arkward, that's why it's not cheap. Btw, Saigon is quite expensive compare to the remain.
3. Nha Trang is flooded with tourists, is it beautiful? Next, I recommend you to Quy Nhon, or Tuy Hoa ... but a little bit inconvenient because a few resident could speak English.

How much you estimate for accommodation and seafood in Ha Long Bay, 4 stars hotel ?
For me, 4 stars room : my Japanese partner said Excellent : price tag : 80 USD, but to me 38 USD, for tour about 50-60 USD
Fresh seafoods for our big dinner : 8 pax. about 130 USD in total. VIP room. Tip 5$ to waitress but rejected, she get only a half of a dollar only. Choose the right restaurant, nothing more.
Taxi rate now ( mini car ) : 10,000 VND / kilometer = less than 1 dollar for 2 kilometers.

For long range transport, at this moment better choose air over railway.
When your previous trip to Vietnam? Air transport get much attention since then...
As I checked, air ticket in Vietnam cheaper than HSR ticket in China for longer distance. Whileas Vietnam railways is more old fashioned, can't be comparable to even China traditional train.

I just want to comment on 1 point.

Its true that housing in Saigon (and Hanoi) its as expensive as Tokyo. For me, its a horror story that makes no sense, but its very real. There is a big distortion of land prices in Vietnam, its probably related to the government policy of how they manage land since all land belongs to the state, but I'm not sure.

When I was visiting Hanoi I was shown houses (they were not big deal) and they were million dollar houses; In Bangkok those would be $50.000.

Where I live, in Danang, a land plot of 20 x 5 meters within a few blocks of the beach is $150,000 just land. I have no idea how vietnamese people can afford to buy a house in those cities these days.

Just transportation prices were not cheap at all, like the train ticket of reunification express and taxi in Nha Trang. I guess it was because Nha Trang is a tourist city?

No, trains are just very expensive in Vietnam, any train, even that the quality is very bad.
State owned and managed of course.

Flying within Vietnam is very cheap, much cheaper than in China.

Same area in another place is only $25,000-40,000.
You must be more shocked if you know Vietnamese still could pay for such a house, studying their income... LOL.
Let try to figure out how, a guy with $500 salary could afford for luxury house and car.
It's possible.
