Beijing should either get the South China Sea map right or forget the Vietnamese market — for every Chinese product, from smartphones to automobiles.

That’s the message Hanoi sent recently to Beijing, taking the lead once again, among its neighbors, in the fight to contain China’s South China Sea ambitions.

The South China Sea has two maps these days, one drawn by the international community, and another drawn by China.

The difference between the two maps is that the Chinese version includes the “nine-dash line,” an ambiguous self-defined borderline, also going by the name “cow’s tongue.” The nine-dash line contains areas claimed by neighboring countries like Vietnam and the Philippines. It’s an area which allows China the right to control almost the entire South China Sea, and Beijing wants the world to know about it.

That’s why Beijing has launched an offensive campaign to legitimize and disseminate this map, printing it on Chinese passports and books, displaying it on movies, and inserting it in GPS and smartphone devices.

But Vietnam has been pushing back hard against Beijing’s campaign. Last month, it banned the showing of Abominable, a film produced by DreamWorks and China, which includes a scene containing a map featuring the “nine-dash line.”

Now, Vietnam is taking its “war” against Beijing from movies to apps. It has stepped up inspections of China-made smartphones to make sure that they come with the right map of the South China Sea. It has also stepped up inspections of automobiles to make sure that their GPS comes with the right map, too.

“These steps have the potential of being turned into a trade war between Vietnam and China, which eventually spreads to Malaysia and the Philippines,” says Stathis Giannikos from Athens-based Pushkin Institute. ”They, too, have taken measures against the Abominable film last month. And don’t count India out, a country with territorial differences with China.”

Yannis Tsinas, a retired Washington diplomat and Greek naval officer, is concerned that the map war could raise the risk of an open military confrontation in the South China Sea. “When maps and borderlines are drawn,” he says, the day of an outright war “is coming closer.”

Hopefully, not that much closer, at least not yet. But the map wars could hurt sales, especially for Chinese smartphone makers like Huawei and Xiaomi, which count on these markets for their growth beyond China.

Vietnam is so smart? Why your harukyu-5 moved out of 9 dash line and not continue drilling? Self delusion.

Another typical self bragging by American to encourage the stupid. It is a massive defeat for Vietnam but they spin the situation to sounds Vietnam won anything... Zero. China is going to start drilling in 9 dash line and Vietnam cannot start anymore new drill in New dash line. China got bigger and more patrol boat. We play the game of attribution which Vietnam cannot afford as their economy is smaller.

You can continue playing the game of hooligan. However there no evidence Viet Nam backs down.

You still haven answer me why harukyu-5 is not in 9 dash line drilling? It's an expensive equipment rent from Japan. Putting on Vietnam sea not doing work is a big waste of money. Does that answer your evidence call?

China is 14trillion USD economy and you Vietnam is 300billion USD. You want to play a game of attribution? You think those Patrol boat burns cheap fuel? How about the food which your crew eats?

You think Vietnam can afford to match every amount of coastguard China send in?

Malay natives came from Arabia. You mean we stole your islands in Arabia seas?
Everyday I learn something new.

I think he's talking about SCS not Arabian sea. I do know that Vietnam has competing claims against Malaysia,China, Brunei, Philippines and the country people don't often talk about Taiwan(ROC). However the later has the very same claim(they were the source of China's nine dash line claim in the first place(funny enough the KMT had an even larger claim called the 11 dash line, the CCP reduced it years later after they came to power). So it's not a China vs everybody else per se. It's a very complex situation of various countries having claims and counter claims. Reason it's difficult to form any sort of coherent policy or united front in this respect. Since all major claimants have competing claims against each other.

The two reefs (Not Island) are Amboyna Cay and Barque Canada Reef. Philippines also occupy one reef commodore reef but that overlap with each other 200km EEZ. But with Vietnam it is very clearly within Malaysian EEZ. Vietnam is thousands of miles away !

LOL I wonder how Vietnam managed to occupy so many reefs compared to all the other claimants. Especially given the fact that they emerged from french colonial rule and soon entered a bloody war with the U.S that almost divided the country and after that they were immediately placed under sanctions and isolation by both China, U.S , ASEAN and western powers. So it's surprising and interesting to see that they still managed to occupy the vast majority of islands/reefs in the SCS. Seems to me like the ideal time countries like China/Malaysia could have displaced Vietnam from these islands without the international community even bothering to care is long gone. Interesting to see. :D

Chinese are big liars!

When the dashed lines were drawn they controlled nothing zero islands in the SC sea. Unlike UK, the Chinese never had a concept of sea sovereignty. That is something they invented recently.

Vietnam emerged as Victor in the wars against France and America. Understandable we control most islands. Actually we control less islands than we had before because Chinese used forced taking the islands from us. In the times when we were weak.

The islands we control go back to the times when we annihilated the kingdom of Champa. Back then, they were the master of the SC sea.

More like the Vietnamese had the foresight of occupying those islands early on when many countries like China, Philippines, Malaysia etc didn't see the importance of such a strategic sea lane. Can't blame them for being far sighted and even cunning in this case :victory1:
