Venezuela & China vow to boost military ties

Venezuelan Defense Minister Carlos Jose Mata Figueroa met here on Monday with General Chen Bingde, chief of the general staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), and exchanged views on enhancing cooperation between the two militaries.

Mata said the visit marked the first in the new century by PLA chief of the general staff. "It is a major event in Venezuelan-Chinese military relations."

He said he believed the visit will further deepen bilateral military cooperation in various fields and promote the development of their friendly ties.

The minister said Venezuela is one of China's best friends and recent years have witnessed steady development of bilateral relations between the two armies and fruitful results in their cooperation in various fields.

Venezuela is willing to work together with China to push the Venezuelan-Chinese military cooperation to a new high, added Mata.

For his part, General Chen said Venezuela is an important country in Latin America and China attaches great importance to the development of friendly relations with Venezuela.

"The past few years have seen the steady deepening of Sino-Venezuelan strategic partnership and cooperation in various sectors in a comprehensive way," Chen said.

He expressed China's appreciation for Venezuela's adherence to the one -China policy and its support for China on issues related to Taiwan and Tibet.

Along with of steady development of Sino-Venezuelan bilateral relations, Chen said, the past few years have also seen great developments in military relations between the two sides, including frequent exchange of visits by top military leaders, more military exchanges and cooperation in various areas, and training of military personnel.

Chen said China pays great attention to the development of Sino-Venezuelan military ties and would like to deepen bilateral military cooperation and relations on a mutually beneficial basis

During his three-day stay in Venezuela, Chen will also meet with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and visit the country's Ministry of Defense and a military academy.

Before arriving in Venezuela, Chen paid a three-day visit to Ecuador. He will later travel to Peru.
