Dehradun: Despicable politics in a national tragedy were Instagrammed for India today from Dehradun, where politicians fought each other over appropriating 200 tourists who had been rescued.
Members of the Congress and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) had both booked flights to Andhra Pradesh for the evacuees. They fought over whose plane the tourists would use to go home.

The group that had been rescued was finally divided between the two flights.

TDP president Chandrababu Naidu blamed airport officials for "not exercising control" and the Congress for starting the fight. He also said his party workers were upset because buses with his posters were not being allowed into the airport.

In the 12 days since Uttarakhand was pounded by torrential rain, the military has led a heroic and expansive effort to locate and help thousands of people who were stranded in the hilly state, many of them pilgrims who were visiting the region's four famous shrines which include Badrinath and Kedranth.

Through this, politicians have been unable to stop themselves from reaching for political mileage. The Congress and BJP have spent days arguing over a visit to Uttarakhand by Narendra Modi, dubbed "a Rambo Act" by the media with one newspaper claiming he managed to help evacuate 15,000 pilgrims from Gujarat.

Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde then urged politicians not to visit the state, stressing that it distracts from crucial rescue missions. That didn't persuade his party's vice-president, Rahul Gandhi, from landing in Uttarakhand on Monday.

Recently, the TDP's president Chandrababu Naidu complained to the Home Minister in writing that pilgrims from Andhra Pradesh were being "discriminated against" and were not being allowed onto helicopters that are ferrying people to temporary relief camps.
