The Afpak border is one of the most difficult terrains in the world to be monitored and kept secure due to the topography.Pakistani Military check posts are far apart and least equipped for the job and get attacked frequently.
The pattern used by the terrorists is that they somehow manage to group together, launch a surprise attack on one check post, then quickly move to the next check post and then disappear in the mountains.
Pakistan Army's communication either isn't quick enough to warn the nearby check posts or suspicion is that the militants come equipped with radio jamming devices.
Whatever the reason may be,the militants on most occasions have been able to attack a series of nearby check posts without the next check post being able to brace for the attack or call for reinforcements.
Due to financial restrictions Pakistan does not have an "on call" air support and air force does not come to the rescue.
Pakistan does not have spy satellites up in the space and cannot afford 24/7 reconnaissance drones flying in the area.

In your opinion what types of affordable and readily available technologies you can suggest so that a wide area can be kept under watch and some sort of "early warning" system can be devised for troops stationed in those remote area...?

This is More of a brain storming thread...

take help from china on satellite or USA if possible.

The technology is known as : Say goodbye to this god damn war!

We should have thought about that before joining... not when all hell has broken lose, Pakistan's government has sold its dignity and honor and we are looked at with mistrust across a lot of the world.

The issue is it would seem utterly callous and be... iniquitous of us to leave people like Hakeemullah Maseed alone after they have been responsible for the murder of around 40,000 Pakistanis along with his predecessor Baitullah.

In South Asia Pakistan accounts for 79% of all violent deaths. We failed to defeat the terrorists but we are always keen to join wars initiated by the US. Initially this was indeed not our war but it has been successfully exported to Pakistan by our so-called ally.

It was the same in the 1980's and it is exactly the same today. Fighting against the Taliban or for their earlier forefathers the so-called Mujahideen is the same thing when done upon pressure from our useless ally known as the United States. Most importantly the lesson to learn is that Afghanistan is to be left alone. For example when the Soviet-Afghan war began we had almost no drugs in Pakistan and there was no issue of arms everywhere. When the refugees crossed that cursed border everything changed. By the end of the war we had new crisis. A million drug abusers (now 4 million by the way), gun culture taking hold in FATA, factories being setup. Ask @Hyperion about the gun market in Kaniguram (South Waziristan), we all know about Darra Adamkhel which is the biggest. Crime figures for a year-I don't have them now but I remember roughly rose 100%+ as refugees began crowding there. The streets became dirty, dusty and there are even now more people and housing is scarce the population expanding faster than houses to maintain them.

The question for us now is are we willing to swallow the abuses done by militants and let a major injustice take place? In any country a mass murderer is hanged... in our case are we really so callous and so heedless of the concept of justice that we are to leave them? Personally I am willing to give PTI's solution a chance.... mostly on account of his Burki links but the emotional side of me which everyone on this site has probably got a taste of at least once wants my Pakistan to break lose and massacre every one of those Taliban terrorists, no matter what the cost-but the cost is real because in our operations civilians are killed and displaced, there are curfews, their are injustices and I know this as an independent journalist with contacts in those areas...

Let's run a scenario. Imagine no 911 and the Afghan war existed. You know have Talibans and Al-Qaeda stronger with over 12 years of recruiting and training....any idea how these people with 500k or 1 million soldiers, sympathizers, etc would be black mailing Pakistani gov't due to it's 'modern and secular' policies?????
If the US and its allies' war machines have been killing these people since 2002 and they STILL seem to be holding up well in some areas....i can only imagine if there wasn't any US and its allies there. These guy would be threatening ANY country around with a strong force of over 100K suicide bombers. What would Pakistan do in that case???? I think the US has actually done a favor to Pakistan. Even with so many that the US has gotten rid of, they've STILL managed to do a lot of damage in Pakistan. If there wasn't a US, then I can't imagine the gov't of Pakistan lasting for more than a couple of months in front of thousands of crazy suicide bombers. So please realize the reality.
Personally, I wished that the US hadn't given a ton of money to the gov't. Instead the US would start and complete projects for the welfare of the people of Pakistan on its own or through a governing body. That way, the average Pakistani would see how much the US's been trying to do for them. The money flowing through Pakistani gov't never makes it to people. BUT.....that isn't the US's fault. We've provided those funds in good faith for the betterment of the average Pakistanis. It took us a while to learn the internal 'black hole of corruption' that the money goes into and never comes back out!!!

ONE solution that I'd propose.....MINE the damn* border brother. Make entry and exit points with military on them. And put signs for public to know. THAT's the ONLY solution!

Wire the god-damn border. Make strict "entry" , and "exist" points through which Afghans/Pashtuns will cross. Use surveillance balloons, and drones.

Deploy military/paramilitary on border....

If Pakistan government REALLY wanted to do something, they would've. Its not that hard, specially for a nation like Pakistan.

But we all know that Pakistanis doesn't want terrorists to be gone. (Pakistanis here mean establishment).

.
Can't even mine the border areas because of the Human Rights outcry that would entail from such a decision.
The only affordable option is constant over-flight of hand-held drones in areas most susceptible to attacks.

Perhaps these:

Actually, it is a little different in this case. The Pakistanis at one point wanted to mine the border. Karzai had a shi* fit and came to Washington crying that this was an attempt to 'divide' the Pashtuns who currently walk over to either side. The US told Pakistan and they stopped. So not sure if the Pakistanis don't want that or the Afghans have issues with it. But either way, the Pakistanis shouldn't really care about the Afghans here. They should safe guard their country and protect their national interests

A feasible air support option may be either an AC-130..My guess is that its flight per hour is less costly than any fighter jet..
Another option may be K-8 with Rocket pods..

Here is a rear end of C-27J rigged with a cannon sticking out of the side door..i dont see any reason why Pakistan cant do the same to one or few of C-130

I dont know what is stopping PA from using small drones over each check post. The drone have infrared sensors installed in them can easily identify people coming towards the checkpost.

As far as Jammers are concern , they tends to jam a specific set of frequencies. PA should modifiy their wireless equipment in such a way that they become prone to jamming.

They can use different set of frequencies .
They can use something like CDMA to make their communication equipment more secure to jamming.

Even they can use heli drone for firing small rockets from the above.

Many things are possible but i dont know Y PA is not actually looking in to these options .

@Oscar is PA coms prone to Jamming?

Why piss about with one cannon? If your going to be a big slow moving target you want to make damn sure no one thinks its a good idea to stand around and shoot back.

AC-130A Surprise Package, Pave Pronto, AC-130E Pave Spectre
2× 7.62 mm GAU-2/A miniguns
2× 20 mm M61 Vulcan cannon
2× 40 mm (1.58 in) L/60 Bofors cannon
