USA’s new Major League Cricket makes big hitting start

DALLAS: Major League Cricket got underway in Texas on Thursday, and the most serious attempt yet to establish a domestic competition in the United States provided all the ingredients of a modern Twenty20 league.

Fans at the purpose built cricket stadium, just a 15-minute drive from Dallas Fort Worth airport, were decked out in the yellow shirts of the victorious home side, the Texas Super Kings, and were treated to the familiar sight of big sixes and non-stop action.

The Super Kings won by 69 runs after making 181 for six and then bowling out the Los Angeles Knight Riders for 112.

Any concerns that cricket in America might not be the real deal vanished when the action got under way and the crowd began cheering the big hitting of the home team.

The stadium previously belonged to the now defunct Texas Airhogs minor league baseball club, but since taking over the venue, MLC has spent over $20 million making it cricket-specific.

For viewers watching the TV broadcast, it would have been hard to tell the difference between MLC and the other T20 tournaments that have sprung up around the world.

With international players competing alongside domestic talent from the USA national team, the standard of play was clearly professional and the field and wicket looked up to scratch.

That was in marked contrast to many previous, short-lived attempts to “break the American market” with one-off events in unsuitable venues, and was also light years away from much of the domestic cricket, which for years was played on matting tracks.

Texas’ South African bowler Rusty Theron was taken aback by the success of the opening game.

“I am actually a little bit emotional, to be honest. This is such a grand event. There was an unbelievable atmosphere and I want to thank each and every individual who has come out here,” he said.

Super Kings batsman David Miller, who was awarded Player of the Match, for his hard-hitting 61 from 42 balls, including four sixes, was also impressed.

“It’s fantastic to see such a great turn out and the facilities have been fantastic. I think there have been a few guys, kind of questioned around what it was going to be like but it shot the lights out here,” said the South African, one of a number of players with a background in the world’s top Twenty20 competition, the Indian Premier League (IPL).

MLC has backing from four IPL franchises including the Mumbai Indians, whose New York team began play on Friday.

England opening batsman Jason Roy, Australian batsman Aaron Finch, South African pace bowler Kagiso Rabada and West Indies spinner Sunil Narine are among the foreign players drafted by the six teams.

Other games will be played in Morrisville, North Carolina, before the playoffs and final return to Texas.

As well as the involvement of IPL teams, Australia’s Cricket Victoria has a high-performance partnership with the San Francisco Unicorns and Cricket New South Wales has a similar role with the Washington Freedom.

The league has broadcast deals with streaming service Willow TV, whose owners are also investors in MLC, and also with Viacom18 in India.

Cricket is just not gonna happen in the US. There is already a bat and ball sport in the US, and Cricket seems to be rather limited to a few commonwealth states, does a T20 professional league even exist in the UK?

Yeah that Anglo-Saxon imperialist stuff (including snooker) doesn't go over well here. :azn:

Limited to the South Asian - west indies diaspora and will likely die out like the Caribbean league did a decade ago.

Not because of the imperialist aspect but simply because the next generation of descendants from these races in the US are doing what all other kids are doing - Basketball or Soccer.

We need to move to Aussie Football.

I still cannot stand baseball - similar to test cricket. Just don’t have the time to spend watching it.

Oh cmon its beautiful, cheap tickets on a nice summer day at the ballpark, maybe bring your kid if you have one, or a nephew. the nostalgia, grab some grub some nachos, sit back and relax the whole day. Or listening to john sterling on the AM radio as you carry on with your work. Its beautiful, almost therapeutic. lol

Tried it a few times - just find it too slow for my taste. Like golf, I like playing it but watching it on the tele or attending a game isn’t for me.

Same with football, too many stoppages. Basketball is much better though.

Shadab Khan played a pivotal role in leading the San Francisco Unicorns to a 22-run win over MI New York on Friday at Grand Prairie Stadium in the inaugural edition of Major League Cricket (MLC).

Despite a challenging start, where Trent Boult and Kagisa Rabada from MI New York, quickly dismissed the Unicorns' top-order batsmen, Shadab and Corey Anderson’s crucial partnership turned the tide in favor of their team.

With the Unicorns struggling at 50-4 after seven overs, the situation demanded a rescue operation. This is when Shadab Khan came to the crease and formed a crucial partnership of 129 runs with Corey Anderson.

Initially, Shadab had a slow start, scoring only three runs from his first six balls. However, he quickly changed the momentum by hitting his compatriot, Ehsan Adil, for a six over backward square, igniting his innings. Shadab followed it up by aggressively striking Adil's next delivery, sending the ball past a leaping backward point fielder for an impressive boundary.

Shadab continued his onslaught by hitting Hammad Azam, another fellow countryman, for a six. Azam bowled a loose half-volley on the off-side, which Shadab disdainfully dispatched over cover for a maximum.

However, it was during the 15th over, bowled by Sarabjit Ladda, that Shadab truly accelerated his innings. Shadab started by smashing a flat six over long-off on Ladda's first ball, which was looped up full on off. He then followed it up with a boundary at deep extra cover. Ladda was left searching for answers and decided to bowl his third delivery flat and short on off, but Shadab responded by planting his front leg and launching the ball for a six. Shadab went on to hoist Ladda for another six down the ground on the fourth delivery of the over, reaching his fifty in just 23 balls.

Adding to his impressive display, Shadab also managed to cleverly scoop a delivery from Trent Boult for a boundary, evading the keeper and guiding the ball to the fine leg area.
Despite Boult eventually getting the better of Shadab by dismissing him on the following delivery, the Pakistan all-rounder had already played a crucial role in rescuing the Unicorns from a precarious situation. His aggressive knock of 61 runs from 30 balls, consisting of four fours and five sixes, proved instrumental in setting a competitive total of 215-5 in 20 overs.

Shadab's impressive batting performance, accompanied by Anderson's unbeaten innings of 91 runs off 52 balls, significantly contributed to the San Francisco Unicorns' final score.
Shadab's impressive batting display did not overshadow his bowling prowess. Shadab started his spell with an economical over against Nicholas Pooran and Dewald Brevis, conceding a mere four runs.

However, Pooran welcomed Shadab in his second over by hitting a boundary off the first ball, attempting to put pressure on the leg-spinner. Not to be deterred, Brevis also decided to take on Shadab's bowling and smashed him for a six in the same over, displaying his aggressive intent.
But Shadab had the last laugh in this battle. On the very next delivery, he outwitted Brevis with his clever bowling tactics. Working in tandem with his fellow countryman Haris Rauf, who positioned himself in the field, Shadab induced Brevis to make another big hit. However, Brevis failed to get the required elevation and Rauf, stationed at mid-off, comfortably held onto the catch, dismissing Brevis and providing Shadab with a well-deserved wicket.

Shadab finished with figures of 3/32 in his three-over spell, while Rauf remained wicketless but conceded 34 runs in his four-over spell. Their combined efforts limited MI New York to a total of 193/5 in 20 overs, falling short of the target of 216 runs set by the Unicorns.

Reflecting on the match, Shadab acknowledged the importance of starting the tournament well and expressed his admiration for Rauf, highlighting the bowler's exceptional skills and attitude towards the game.

"If you bowl in their arc, they will hit you for boundaries. It's very important how you start a tournament; it's a short tournament, so we have to start well. Mumbai have got a very balanced team; we didn't play before and there wasn't any practice game but now we know each other's strengths. Haris Rauf is a world class bowler. I always enjoy his company and his attitude towards the game. He is outstanding and I always learn from him," Shadab said after the match.

It's time for Major League Cricket (MLC). The latest in an increasingly long line of franchise T20 tournaments, this one in the USA… Here's everything you need to know about it (but didn't know whom to ask).

What! Another T20 league? Aren't there some 50 of these already out there?
Yes, but wait. This could be different. Franchise cricket is going to the USA for the first time, after all.

In the USA? Why? Do they even play cricket there?
Of course they do. And as far back as ... 1844! In fact USA was part of the first cricket match involving two countries (as opposed to clubs or other domestic clashes). That was against Canada, at the St George's Cricket Club ground in New York.

More recently, the USA men's team was at the ODI World Cup qualifier in Zimbabwe. They did not win a single game, but reaching the qualifiers is an achievement in itself.

They have talented players in the system and this league can help grow the game there. The timing of the event is significant too, since USA and West Indies will host the men's T20 World Cup around this time next year. And, being the hosts, USA (and West Indies) have gained automatic qualification to that tournament.

Okay, you have my attention now. Tell me more...
MLC has been in the works for a while and, after multiple delays, it will finally see the light of day on July 13. It is being operated by American Cricket Enterprises (ACE) and has been sanctioned by USA Cricket. The ICC has also given official sanction for the league.

ACE is backed by Sameer Mehta and Vijay Srinivasan, founders of Willow TV, the largest cricket broadcaster in North America, and Satyan Gajwani and Vineet Jain of the Times Group in India. MLC has received financial backing to the tune of US$ 120 million from a number of investors, including Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, and Shantanu Narayen, chairman and CEO of Adobe.

In all, there will be 15 group-stage games followed by an eliminator, two qualifiers and the final. Six teams are in action and will start with a round-robin format, with the top four advancing to the playoffs. The format is similar to what they have at the IPL, but the teams will face each other only once in the league phase. Here's the full list of fixtures.

Six teams, you say. Those are...?
Los Angeles Knight Riders, MI New York, San Francisco Unicorns, Seattle Orcas, Texas Super Kings and Washington Freedom.

Whoa, hold on! Knight Riders, Super Kings, MI… sounds familiar.
Four of the six teams are owned by IPL franchise owners.

And these matches will be played in?
Two venues. The first eight league games will be held at Grand Prairie Stadium in Texas before the teams move to Church Street Park Stadium in Morrisville for the next seven outings. The playoffs will be staged at Grand Prairie again.

Never heard of these stadiums. Anything more on them?
The Grand Prairie is a former baseball park, and was redeveloped into a cricket stadium in 2022. The new stadium has a capacity of close to 7000. The other venue, Church Street Park, is in Morrisville, North Carolina, and has a capacity of around 3500, which can be expanded up to 5000.

Nosthush Kenjige: 'We have a responsibility to do the right things all the time, even when nobody is looking'

The USA and MI New York spinner believes there's no substitute for hard work where he comes from

Peter Della Penna
Peter Della Penna
"To have such good cricketers from all around the world playing right here in Dallas, this is all what we wanted from the USA cricketing point of view"
Kenjige says the MLC still feels 'unreal'

That last line sums up the majority of Kenjige's cricket journey, literally and figuratively. The 32-year-old is the epitome for what it takes to make it grafting away in the USA cricket scene. After Kenjige had been identified as a genuine prospect at the 2016 VCP open tryout in New York, he took a five-wicket haul at a USA intra-squad trial two months later in Florida and the USA men's selection panel, at the time headed by former West Indies international Ricardo Powell, gave him a heads up that they were interested, but that he was currently ineligible to play for USA until he met some additional requirements.

Though he was a US citizen, the ICC eligibility rules at the time in 2016 stated that someone who had not been living in the USA for at least four years must demonstrate a commitment to the local community, which could be done through completing 100 days of coaching in the country. According to the ICC definition, 100 days equaled eight hours. So Kenjige would work a normal 9-5 pm shift going around hospitals in New York City inspecting x-ray machines, then drive to an indoor facility and do four hours of coaching on every weeknight from 6 to 10 pm.

On weekends, he would come to the same facility from 10 am until 6 pm to do more coaching with academy players. Before long the owners of the facility gave him his own key so that he could lock up the place after taking a few more hours to spot bowl in the nets on his own after everyone else had left. By February 2017, he had completed his 100 hours of coaching and was deemed eligible to represent USA. He took another five-wicket haul at another USA national team intra-squad scrimmage in March 2017 in Houston, and was immediately picked to play for USA on a World Cricket League tour of Uganda.
