President Donald Trump's administration would like to see a Westinghouse nuclear reactor deal with India move forward, a senior White House official said on Friday ahead of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meetings with Trump on Monday.

The deal, years in the making, has been slow to complete due to concerns about liability in the event of a nuclear accident.

"We're still very much interested in seeing this deal move forward," the official told reporters. "Westinghouse stands by the viability of the project ... We very much support continued negotiations between Westinghouse and its Indian partners."

It seem that Trump is following Obama policies with regard to India. In all other matters Obama and Trump are poles apart.

The agreement was that US would get India into NSG and in return India would provide nuclear Business opportunities. Now, US is unable to get India into NSG as China has out grown US. Forget about China, US influence in the world affairs has gone down so much that even countries like Austria and Ireland are not heeding to US requests. This nuclear deal is dead for all practical purposes. No point in beating a dead horse. People should move on.

India promised to give US, a nuclear plant for NSG waiver. But most of the US Nuclear plants use Japanese tech and components and hence it asked us to sign an agreement with Japan. Infact I dont believe US pushed Japan much to sign the agreement. It was India who spent last 4-5 years convincing Japan to sign it and the agreement was signed after so much technicalities only this year.

US can start building power plants now.

Westinghouse is already bankrupt. No one takes risks to build nuclear plants with bankrupt companies.

What if the company cuts corners and millions of Indians die due to a nuke accident? Indian would have Bhopal all over again but at a much much bigger scale.

Worse Modi has already diluted the nuclear liability clause.
