As far as knowing various armed factions in Afghanistan and Pakistan I think Gul is near the top in the world.

I disagree! Luckily that's only YOUR opinion!

A few things stand out :

1) A desperate Pakistan, while going down, will do huge damage to others, starting India.

Stop spouting nonsense and putting words in Gul's mouth! Where did he ever mention that Pakistan will do huge damage to INDIA? Stop hallucinating and hyperventilating for a change.

3) OBL was already dead years ago.

Oh really? That's why I consider Gul a spokesman of the looney brigade!

4) A civil war in Afghanistan is unlikely now because only two factions: Talibans and others.

And that's precisely why there is likely to be a civil war in Afghanistan once the Americans/ISAF withdraw. The Pashtuns, Tajiks, Hazaras, Uzbeks, Aimaks, Turkmen, Baloch, and other myriad warlords form an explosive mix. Add to this the covert support to many of these ethnic tribes and warlords by Iran, India, CIS republics, Russia etc for their own national interests will result in a war that would make the U.S. civil war of independence look like a walk in the park.

5) Just like, in late 80s, Pakistan negotiated a face-saving exit for the Soviets. Gul believes this time as well Pakistan will enable that.

Far from Pakistan enabling a negotiated settlement, it is more of a spoke in the wheel. Gul's analysis is flawed and simplistic at best. If he thinks all is going to be hunky dory with the installation of a pliable Taliban government in Afghanistan thereby achieving his dream project of 'Strategic Depth' for Pakistan, he is living in a dreamworld of his own making.

don't forget who said this! it's hamid gul who is still living in 80s when USA was fighting war with USSR but this guy really need some help to wake the heck up and smell the coffee. As far as Attacking Pakistan? Well it will never happen in near future and i don't even see this in another 20-30 years from now. Simply because War cost money and USA is not doing well financially and it will not start another war with country like Pakistan which is pretty strong. Afghanistan had no army and maybe more so 50-70,000 talibans but USA deployed around 200,000 plus troops against them altogether with ISAF. now in order to attack Pakistan which has army strong as 1.1 million reserve included. It would need more numbers to physically attack Pakistan, USA would need pre 2001 economy and collision of similar to gulf war1 or 9/11 sort of situation. Hamid gul should stop charging people up in Pakistan. he might need some wake up pills

That is how these guys make money and ensure steady flow of funds by drumming up war hysteria and creating imaginary situations.

Well according to Gul, the war has already expanded into Pakistan. So why hasn't WW3 started? Drone attacks, special ops in Pakistan e.t.c. aren't these acts of war?

What is said is that he makes Pakistani army look like idiots. It seems that he thinks the best strategy to defend Pakistan is act like mad men who can do anything.
