ew York - The United States as expected on Saturday vetoed a draft resolution supported by Arab states for the UN Security Council to condemn the killings of 18 Palestinians in the northern Gaza Strip by Israeli Defence Forces.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said that the US was 'compelled' to reject the resolution because it 'used the tragic incident in Beit Hanoun to advance a one-sided political agenda.'

US Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton cast a no vote, which amounts to a veto, when the 15-nation Security Council voted on the Arab text. Ten council members voted in favour while four - Britain, Denmark, Japan and the Slovak Republic - abstained.

The veto unleashed a flurry of criticism in the Middle East.

"This decision by the U.S. government gives unlimited cover to commit more massacres of innocent Palestinians," said Ghazi Hamad, spokesman for the Hamas-led Palestinian government. "This is a shame on the American administration, which says it is trying to promote human rights and democracy in the Middle East."

Qatar's U.N. Ambassador Nassir Al-Nasser warned in the Security Council meeting that the failure of the body to act on the draft would lead to more Israeli violence against Palestinians.

"Any lukewarm reaction or response on our part gives the impression we are shirking from our humanitarian responsibilities," said Al-Nasser, who sponsored the resolution on behalf of the Palestinians. Qatar is the only Arab nation on the council

The Arab League was planning to hold an emergency meeting of foreign ministers in Cairo, Egypt, on Sunday to decide how to respond the latest Israeli offensive.

But Michael O'Hanlon, a senior fellow at The Brookings Institution, said the fact that the council allowed the draft to go to a vote showed the world's frustration with the U.S. not involving other members of the so-called Quartet of Mideast mediators in recent decisions on Israel. The other members are the U.N., the European Union and Russia.

"They don't have a stake in the talks and they are more willing now to force our hand," he said. "A lot of times the world has felt (the U.S.) has been too pro-Israel, but in this case, people are just fed up."

Thats why it is guaranteed, that the U.S will fail in the future. Just like the Soviets, they have their feet in too many places.

every power is bound to fade sometime, the US is no exception
that is why it is trying to make alliances now, it alone cannot hold the world.

the question we must be asking now is who will be the succesor to rival US dominance? or who will the US ally with to rival the rest?

. . .
Agreed bro :)

This was bound to happen but a bit late i guess
But it is never too late :D Winds of change

Regrettably, despite being a 'neo conservative', Bush is another pro Israeli president in a long line of pro Israeli presidents. I know Richard Quest of CNN quite well. He is himself a Jew albeit an enlightened one. I asked him why had Collin Powel; then US Secreatry of State; objected to even a word of condemnation of Israel in a conference in South Africa under the auspices of Nelsdon Mandela, ( this was pre 9/11). He replied that there were two reasons.

Firstly, the 'Think Tanks' have a disproportionate number of US Jewry. Most of the strategic policy plans, regardless of the Party in power, are drawn up by these think tanks. Secondly, most of the bigwigs in the media and the broadcasters are Jewish. Since US public opinion is made by the media, no ploitical party can afford to alienate these influential media personalities.

Bush went to war in Iraq without the UN support. Main problem is that being the sole super power ( US on side and rest of the world on the other and US wins) US has started behaving as as bully boy with 'I am always right' attitude. Perhaps Iraq war will bleed US enough and force US to stop being the universal policeman and/ or some other power (China) will emerge to challange US as Russia did in the period upto the 80's.

.
china could not challange us staus in near future.....but the iraq and afghanistan can do the trick.....and if us attacked iran then the rest will be done....

.
funny American did this and got away with it NO ONE HERE IS actually asking what did the Arabs did after that.:disagree:
