US To Supply Stealth F-35 Jets, Originally Planned For Turkey, To Arch-Foe Greece

The United States has reportedly approved the sale of fifth-generation F-35 stealth fighter jets to Greece almost a month after Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced a “robust” arms purchase program amid tensions with Turkey in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Greek Estia newspaper has reported that U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo gave a “green light” for the supply of 20 F-35s during his recent visit to Greece. As part of the deal, six jets will be purchased in 2022. Of the 20 fighter jets, six of the F-35s were originally meant for Turkey.

Why Turkey Didn’t Get F-35s?
Turkey was headed to procure 100 of the Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II conventional takeoff and landing variants of the Joint Strike Fighter, the same version used by the U.S. Air Force.

With a total Turkish investment of more than $1 billion, 10 Turkish companies were involved in the development/production of the 5th generation aircraft.

Several U.S. congressmen had urged the U.S. administration to suspend the procurement of these fighters to Turkey because of the latter’s decision to buy Russian S-400 advanced air defense systems.

The US concern was that the Turkish procurement of S-400s would give Moscow access to critical details about the way their premiere surface-to-air missile system performs against the new 5th generation aircraft.

Eventually, following Ankara’s acceptance of the S-400 air defense system, the US had to remove Turkey from the F-35 joint strike fighter program in July 2019.

Tensions in the Mediterranean
There are wild speculations that the US could shift its İncirlik base in Turkey to Crete in Greece. The matter is under discussion by the U.S. Senate and it will resume after the Greece-U.S. defense agreement expires in a few days, and the government will propose to Parliament its five-year extension.

Last month, amid the heightened tensions with Ankara, Greece’s Prime Minister had said: “The time has come to reinforce the armed forces … these initiatives constitute a robust program that will become a national shield”.

Greece would also be acquiring 18 French-made Rafale warplanes, four multipurpose frigates, and four navy helicopters, while also recruiting 15,000 new troops and pouring resources into the national arms industry and cyberattack defense.

Securing new anti-tank weapons, torpedoes, and missiles are also part of Greece’s arms purchase list.

France, which will be delivering six Rafale jets by 2022, has supported Greece in its burgeoning showdown with Turkey. French President Emmanuel Macron has asked Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan to not cross the “red line” and has sent warships and fighter jets to the region.

The hopes for de-escalation are low, as earlier this month, Turkey announced naval exercises in the eastern Mediterranean and sent its research ship, the Oruç Reis, back to contested waters to continue the search for hydrocarbons. Turkey claims equal rights to the resources in the disputed waters that Greece considers its own.

If greece gets its hands on F35 it will be a serious escalation, and will pose a grave threat to Turkey.
I still failed to see Turkey justification for going down the S400 route jeopardizing the whole F35 program in which Turkey was a partner

.
Okay, have to give credit where due. Well played Greece. Rafale and F35 along with already flying assets pose a very serious threat to TuAF.

now Russia has a great baggage and owe greatly to Turkey!

They now must sell their Su57

While the S-400 is a capable air defense system it is not worth losing f-35. I hope Erdogan knows what he is doing

Turkey has planned a couple of steps ahead of F-35s:
  • F-35s are the Trojan Horses with tons of technical issues
  • Stealth is 90% about EW that, if not indigenous, can turn out to be fatal; hence, Turkey's after her own stealth technology to be put into her own jet fighters, jet powered UAVs etc...
  • S-400 is a part of Turkey's very own THAAD-type comprehensive and all-inclusive AD system, not to mention a quantum leap in her deep understanding about long range radars and AD missiles technologies
Okay, have to give credit where due. Well played Greece. Rafale and F35 along with already flying assets pose a very serious threat to TuAF.
Not really!!! It's all about having indigenous EW capabilities or not!!! If you have it you can beat the rivals like rabbits!! Turkey is ages ahead of Greece in this regard!!! By the by, Turkey's developing her very own stealth technology to be put into her very own unmanned/manned jets for a reason....

No welfare of the people, bankrupt but let's buy lots of weapons. Glad we left the EU, otherwise we would be funding this nonsense.

EU is increasingly failing, it's better for the UK to forge its own trade pacts and go it alone instead of financing headaches like Greece or being bound to rules dictated by radical secular terrorists like France which will only hamper the UK's own economic progress.

Considering the US had imposed an informal weapons embargo on Turkey for 2 years do you think they'd actually let them have the jets?
Congress has secretly blocked US arms sales to Turkey for nearly two years

Turkey is a NATO member, it had time and time again requested to purchase American patriot batteries and THAAD air defence systems to cover its airspace but time and time again the US refused to sell it to them.

What else should Turkey do?

Turkey was right to purchase the S-400 which itself is just a temporary solution while they finish off their own long range air defence system "Siper". From what I've read/heard about Siper it may be equivalent to the S-500 Russia is about to introduce.

This is after they've already successfully completed the Hisar-A (short range) and Hisar-O (medium range) air defence systems.

Pakistan, Malaysia and Indonesia should join Turkey's weapons development programs particularly the Siper and TAI TF-X. Our combined economies would be able to produce and procure these systems at great costs particularly if they're manufactured in Pakistan and Indonesia which has far lower labor costs.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo title should be changed to U.S. Secretary of Sales Mike Pompeo

Looks like after Iraq/Syria , the target is Turkey while keeping Pakistan , hooked up in FATF
Egypt will be soon fighting over water with Ethopia

I hope you are right brother however the options now left are to invest in Turkey's own TFX Program, Russian SU-57 which was also shown to President and Pakistan China project Azam. In the end Pakistan Turkey need to come up with a sanction free program of their own which can rival that of the West and without any strings attached to it.
The weapon is just a tool, and why should choose to be its slave conversely?
A tool which if used properly can have adverse affects on oneself. Slave yes no need hence Pakistan and China need to have a domestic solution of our own. Turkey has its own program as do Pakistan with China's support. What remains to be seen is how fast can these projects materialize compared to our adversaries.

.
Not very likely.
Greece does not have the budget to afford F-35s.
