The United States has been reportedly mulling sanctions against Pyongyang as part of its maximum pressure campaign despite preparations for the June 12 summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un.

The White House is considering dozens of new sanctions against North Korea, which may go into effect early next week, US-based media reported.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the US National Security Council met on Thursday to discuss potential sanctions against Pyongyang, military action and other ways forward.

US President Donald Trump said earlier his decision to cancel the historic summit in Singapore was a setback for North Korea and for the world. The president placed the fault on the hostile rhetoric emanating from Pyongyang but invited the North's leader to contact him if he changed his mind about the meeting.

However, North Korea is still reportedly open for talks with the United States after Donald Trump cancelled the summit over Pyongyang’s alleged hostile remarks.

"We express our willingness to sit down face-to-face with the US and resolve issues anytime and in any format," North Korean Deputy Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan was quoted as saying by the Yonhap news agency.

The North Korean senior diplomat added that the US decision to call off the summit was not what the world wanted, and urged Trump to meet in order to put an end to "grave hostile relations."

Kim Kye Gwan emphasized that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un had focused all his efforts on preparing for the meeting with his US counterpart in Singapore.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo said on Thursday that the United States would most likely impose new sanctions on North Korea and would encourage other countries to do the same. He said previously DPRK could get relief from sanctions if it gave up its nuclear weapons.

Diplomats to Pursue Dialogue Between Washington and Pyongyang

On Friday, The US and South Korean top diplomats agreed in a phone call to continue dialogue between Washington and Pyongyang, the South’s Foreign Ministry reportedly said.

US State Secretary Michael Pompeo and South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha had "in-depth discussions" on North Korea and their path forward, the ministry said, as quoted by the Yonhap news agency.

They agreed to continue efforts to "create conditions" for the US-North Korea talks after US President Donald Trump called off the June 12 meeting in Singapore with North Korea’s Kim Jong-un.

Meanwhile, Singapore, the host of the called-off summit between North Korea and the United States, said it was upset by the US decision, the island nation’s Foreign Ministry stated.

"Singapore regrets that the scheduled summit between President of the United States Donald J Trump and Democratic People’s Republic of Korea State Affairs Commission Chairman Kim Jong Un will no longer take place on 12 June 2018," the ministry’s spokesperson said.

Singapore Officials hope that efforts to find a path toward a lasting peace and stability in the Korean peninsula will continue, the ministry said Thursday. This sentiment was expressed earlier in the day by Russia, France, South Korea and the UN chief.

First, what preparations? The summit was canceled. IMHO, this is about China. Trump is trying to use NK to pressure China for more concessions on the economic front.

China might not offer any more concessions or become less willing to finalize a deal on trade after this rebuke of the summit by Trump.

Nope I don't think so
What China is currently earning from USA 1000 time more the amount of money it needs to support NK and keep NK strong and defiant. There is something else going on here.

Secondly USA cannot go to war with NK because if USA attacks NK, they can make a Nuclear strike and if USA manages to ground all their Nukes but they have SLBM capability and that cannot be stopped. Those diesel electric subs are very silent and they can pop up any where near continental USA and hit any city so. What is Trump trying to do over here.

Xi caught between 2 manbaby maniacs. The dotard and the fatboy.

US is never interested in peace with NK. They want an excuse to continue their stay in Korea peninsula.
I'm agreed, I think the US wants the N.Korea's denuclearzation, at the same time keeping their military exercise and army station in Korea peninsula, which is unacceptable by N.Korea.

I agree. I do wonder if this is a retaliation after Mnuchin's last visit.

For starters, TPTB would never allow the US to go to war against NK. If the US goes to war, it'll be against Iran. Second, NK doesn't have SLBM capability. Yes they're trying to develop the capability but it'll be a long time before they achieve it, unless SOMEONE gives them the knowledge/technology. In any case, most problems are related to money.

And it may also be pressure from Japan as well.

We may see Tomahawk flying over CN sea when US attack NK like Syria. CN only can sit and see Tomahawk flying, dare not fight back.

NK gave them no excuse they want the talks to go ahead but US pulled out on purpose and without reason now why they did that? I cannot understand. Any one who says it is about China trade is wrong because NK is national security threat to USA.

We MAY see or may not see that is left to be discussed. But I did see and witnessed chemicals being sprayed on monkey land and making retards like yourself for generations. It seems like the chemicals are still working.

What happened? From the first summit and Nobel Prize for Trump to sanctions? A lot can change in a few days.

IIRC, NK have a defense treaty with China where Pres. Xi stated that they'll honor such agreement. If China refuses to act then no one will ever sign any treaty with China. As for what China will do, they'll probably do what Russia did in Syria regarding the missile attack. In any case, I highly doubt Pres. Moon will allow it. He might follow what Erdogan has done.

Current idiotic US foreign policy is sanction and tariff. Nothing surprising here.
