US to back India's leadership role in Indian Ocean, South Asia, says top military commander

WASHINGTON: Seeking a "long-term security relationship" with India, a top US military commander has said his country will support New Delhi's "leadership role" in the Indian Ocean and South Asia.

The US Pacific Command (PACOM) "will increase its efforts to nurture the strategic partnership and expand engagement with India as well as support her leadership role in the Indian Ocean and South Asia," PACOM Commander, Admiral Sameul J Locklear III, said in an address to the Asia Society here.

"We will improve our interoperability," Locklear said. Referring to his maiden trip to India in October, he said he witnessed firsthand the invaluable perspective of the world's largest democracy and one of the world's most rapidly growing economies.

"Our two nations share and embrace the same values: a love of freedom and an entrepreneurial spirit that fuels the potential of the global economy," he said.

Earlier in the day at a Pentagon news conference, Locklear said he has been directed by US President Barack Obama to seek a long-term relationship with India.

"I have been directed by the President to seek a - as all of the parts of our government have -- long-term security relationship, a partnership with India. And that covers a lot of different areas; but in the military area, we look for opportunities to interoperate with each other," he said.

"We are headed in that direction," Locklear sad. "We very much support India's military, India taking a leadership in the security issues in and around the Indian Ocean. And we are looking for opportunities to participate and interoperate with them where we can," said Locklear, whose jurisdiction expands over the entire Asia-Pacific region.

"The Asia-Pacific has been described as stretching from 'Hollywood to Bollywood' and that's really the area of my focus, from California to India. It encompasses over half the earth's surface and well more than half of its population... the Pacific Ocean itself is the largest physical feature on the planet," he said.

If all the world's landmasses were placed in the Pacific, there would still be room left over for an additional Africa, Canada, United States, and Mexico, Locklear said. "So that gives you an idea of the size of it...it's like taking a ship from San Diego to Hawaii or Norfolk to England."

As I always say, they need us in the Indian Ocean and at the western Chinese borders, while they can focus on the eastern sides.

True, but India should bat for peace and stability in south Asia, and leave those two powers china and US to battle it out.

That would be silly. China is threatening our borders not the Americans. Only someone naive will believe that China will share power with India. China wants to make sure that this is the Chinese century & certainly does not want to share it with India. We are not being sucked into an American plan, we are already there on our own & the Americans & we can mutually be of assistance to each other. If the Americans get up & leave, it is India that will have to deal with China. We need not be eager to join any anti-China club but we should not shy away from making use of the Americans to serve our purpose.

It sounds a fine debate. Some are really feeling macho as India is getting first time into an alliance which has been publicised by US well, gradually and persistently. Apparently a very attractive option but cool assessment suggests that India should better stay away from it. India should heed lessons why US is retreating from its military investments all over as a front line state. For Asia- Pacific, if the standard is passed onto India for a while it would soon crash its dream of emerging/remaining as an economic power to reckon. Choice is within a better choice or a bitter choice.

This what i have said in my earlier post. After a decade or so India will mature to defend itself until then India has to make sure peace prevail in s.asia. India has its cards when it comes to China like Malacca straits, trade and Anti china Alliance, Main emphasis should be given to maintain status co. with out getting into any alliance or war so that India will become strong economically and militarily.

There are so many new defense acquisitions and projects that are going on and they require some time to make India potent. US will never leave Asia rather, they will try to contain china or weaken it.

India will never ally itself with america. Americans will continue raising tensions between India and China but we wont fall into it. Too much opposition and CPI in India

Standing at an American point of view, there are nothing we should do and could do to "Involve" the issue with India and China, we are neither Border with China, nor India. Anything we do will not bring stability to US (We are sitting quietly on the other side of another pacific.)
India need help, or not, have nothing to do with America. But One need to realise this.

China and India are both in the same continent and China are going to growth no matter what, and when a country grow, it kinda took down the other country surrounding them. Indian Share a border with China, to think China will peacefully co-exist with India is absurd. Today is senkaku, SCS, tomorrow are AC and AP. You get the idea.

That was for the Indian Poster.

For China, India is gonna grow no matter what, when a country grow and they sort of take down every other country surrounding their grow, either you are under them or you are against them, that's the idea of Survival the fittest. It would be naive to have a Chinese think they could co-exist with india. The old saying 一山能藏二虎 ring true, today it's AP,AC, tomorrow it's SCS.

Have a relationship with US, or not, we simply don't care. I just know one thing, there can always be one big brother in Asia, and now, India and China both wanted the seat. For US, we will just have to deal with whoever won in the end. So. It's up to Asia to decide.

You don't have to like it, but this is a fact.

Exactly there will be only one big brother in Asia and no doubt India and China will compete with each other for dominance,

India on the other hand is still maturing to be a strong military power, Economically India is yet to realize its full potential.

It is US strategy to contain China and recently US is engaging with Asian countries more and its preference is shifted to Asia. If US cannot contain China within a decade or so by hook or crook China will become a threat to West and US dominance.

All India can do is stay away from this tussle and become strong only by defending itself from the tussle between India and China.

Going by the predictions by 2025 India will be in top 4 in the world may be top 3 . At that point India can defend itself from China.
